Abstract

Disclosed are novel engineered fuel feed stocks, feed stocks produced by the described processes, and methods of making the fuel feed stocks. Components derived from processed MSW waste streams can be used to make such feed stocks which are substantially free of glass, metals, grit and noncombustibles. These feed stocks are useful for a variety of purposes including as gasification and combustion fuels.

Claims (46)

1. An engineered fuel feed stock comprising:

a carbon content of between about 30 wt. % and about 40 wt. %, and

a hydrogen content of between about 3 wt. % and about 10 wt. %, wherein the engineered fuel feed stock contains biodegradable waste and non-biodegradable waste and substantially no glass, metals, grit, and noncombustible waste; and is produced by a process comprising:

a) receiving a plurality of MSW waste feeds;

b) inventorying the components of the plurality of MSW waste feeds of step a) based on the chemical molecular characteristics of the components;

c) comparing the chemical molecular characteristics of the components of the plurality of MSW waste feeds inventoried in step b) with the chemical molecular characteristics of the engineered fuel feed stock; and

d) optionally adding additional components which contain chemical molecular characteristics, whose sum together with the inventoried components of step b) equal the chemical molecular characteristics of the engineered fuel feed stock.

2. The engineered fuel feed stock of claim 1 , wherein the engineered fuel feed stock has a moisture content of between about 1 wt. % and about 30 wt. %.

3. The engineered fuel feed stock of claim 1 , wherein the engineered fuel feed stock has a sulfur content of less than about 2 wt. %.

4. The engineered fuel feed stock of claim 1 , wherein the engineered fuel feed stock has a chlorine content of less than about 1 wt. %.

5. The engineered fuel feed stock of claim 1 , wherein the engineered fuel feed stock has a HHV of between about 5,000 BTU/lb and about 15,000 BTU/lb.

6. The engineered fuel feed stock of claim 1 , wherein the engineered fuel feed stock has a volatile matter content of about 40 wt. % to about 80 wt. %.

7. The engineered fuel feed stock of claim 1 , wherein the engineered fuel feed stock has an ash content of less than about 10 wt. %.

8. The engineered fuel feed stock of claim 1 , wherein the engineered fuel feed stock is comminuted.

9. The engineered fuel feed stock of claim 1 , wherein the engineered fuel feed stock is densified.

10. The engineered fuel feed stock of claim 9 , wherein the densified feed stock is in the form of a pellet.

11. An engineered fuel feed stock produced by a process comprising:

a) separating a plurality of MSW waste feeds into a plurality of MSW waste components based on chemical molecular characteristics;

b) selecting chemical molecular characteristics for the engineered fuel feed stock comprising:

a carbon content of between about 30 wt. % and about 40 wt. %, and

a hydrogen content of between about 3 wt. % and about 10 wt. %, wherein the engineered fuel feed stock contains biodegradable waste and non-biodegradable waste and substantially no glass, metals, grit, and noncombustible waste;

c) selecting MSW waste components from step a) whose sum of chemical molecular characteristics equal the chemical molecular characteristics selected in step b);

d) optionally adding other components to the selection of step c) based on a comparison of molecular characteristics of the MSW waste components selected in step c) with the chemical molecular characteristics selected in step b); and

e) mixing the components of step c) and optionally of step d) to produce the engineered fuel feed stock.

12. The engineered fuel feed stock of claim 11 , wherein the engineered fuel feed stock has a moisture content of between about 1 wt. % and about 30 wt. %.

13. The engineered fuel feed stock of claim 11 , wherein the engineered fuel feed stock has a sulfur content of less than about 2 wt. %.

14. The engineered fuel feed stock of claim 11 , wherein the engineered fuel feed stock has a chlorine content of less than about 1 wt. %.

15. The engineered fuel feed stock of claim 11 , wherein the engineered fuel engineered fuel feedstock has a HHV of between about 5,000 BTU/lb and about 15,000 BTU/lb.

16. The engineered fuel feed stock of claim 11 , wherein the engineered fuel feed stock has a volatile matter content of about 40 wt. % to about 80 wt. %.

17. The engineered fuel feed stock of claim 11 , wherein the engineered fuel feed stock has an ash content of less than about 10 wt. %.

18. The engineered fuel feed stock of claim 11 , wherein the mixture of step e) is densified in the form of a pellet.

19. The engineered fuel feed stock of claim 11 , further comprising:

f) comminuting the engineered fuel feed stock of step e).

20. A fuel feed stock, comprising components derived from MSW, the components derived from MSW having, prior to thermal conversion:

a carbon content of between about 30% (w/w) and about 40% (w/w); and

a hydrogen content of between about 3% (w/w) and about 10% (w/w),

wherein the components derived from MSW contain biodegradable waste and non-biodegradable waste, and wherein the fuel feed stock contains substantially no glass, metals, grit, and noncombustible waste.
