Abstract

A method for authentication of a user to a device by a remote server comprises a remote server initiates a local procedure on the device that causes the user to perform an act, wherein the act is observed by the device, and further wherein the act involves relative movement between the user and a camera, where fiducial marks are captured, and information transmitted to the server for the server to make a determination of whether to authorize the user to the device.

Claims (28)

1. A method, comprising:

transmitting to a server from a device an authentication request for a user;

the device receiving from the server an instruction that requests the device to perform a procedure; wherein the procedure causes the user to perform an act that involves a liveness of relative movement between the user and a camera;

the device observing the user performing the act requested by the procedure, wherein a plurality of fiducial marks is captured before and after the relative movement between the user and the camera;

the device real-time transmitting information pertaining to the observation of the act requested by the procedure to the server; and

the device receiving from the server an authorization based on verification of the received information of the act requested by the procedure of the user.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the procedure comprises having the device illuminate a color while the device observes the act.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the procedure comprises having the user cause the device to generate a flash at a location while the device observes the act.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the procedure comprises having the user perform a gesture while the device observes the act.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the procedure comprises having the user cause a flash at an angle relative to the observer while the device observes the act.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the procedure comprises having the user cause a flash at an angle relative to the user while the device observes the act.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the procedure comprises having the user perform a gesture and at the same time cause the device to flash while the device observes the act.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the authentication request is triggered by the device determining that authentication is required based upon conditions.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the conditions include contextual operation information comprising geographical location of the user, the period since a previous successful authentication, or the distance between the current location of a user and the location of previous authorization.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the procedure comprises having the user perform a gesture and at the same time cause the device to flash, the information including information pertaining to the performance of the gesture and the flash; and wherein the authorization is received if the server has further determined whether the user performed the gesture at the same time as the device flashed.

11. A method, comprising:

transmitting to a server from a device an authentication request for a user;

the device receiving from the server an instruction requesting the device to perform a procedure that causes the user to perform an act that involves a liveness of relative movement between the user and a camera;

the device observing the user performing the requested act, wherein a plurality of fiducial marks is captured before and after the relative movement between the user and the camera;

the device real-time transmitting information pertaining to the observation of the requested act to the server; and

the device receiving from the server an authorization if the server, based on said information, has determined whether the relative movement was conducted between the user and the camera.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the procedure comprises having the device illuminate a color while the user performs the act, the information including information pertaining to the colors observed, and wherein the authorization is received if the server has further determined whether the color was illuminated.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the procedure comprises having the user cause the device to generate a flash at a location, the information including information pertaining to flash location; and wherein the authorization is received if the server has further determined whether the flash occurred at the location.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the procedure comprises having the user perform a gesture, the information including information pertaining to the performance of the gesture; and wherein the authorization is received if the server has further determined whether the user performed the gesture.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the procedure comprises having the user cause a flash at a angle relative to the observer, the information including information pertaining to flash angle relative to the observer; and wherein the authorization is received if the server has further determined whether the flash occurred at the angle relative to the observer.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the procedure comprises having the user cause a flash at a particular angle relative to the user, the information including information pertaining to flash angle relative to the user; and wherein the authorization is received if the server has further determined whether the flash occurred at the angle relative to the user.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the authentication request is triggered by the device determining that authentication is required based upon conditions.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the conditions include contextual operation information comprising geographical location of the user, the period since a previous successful authentication, or the distance between the current location of a user and the location of previous authorization.
