Abstract

A system for manipulating a guide catheter within a patient's nasal passages or sinus cavities includes a guide catheter formed from an elongate flexible member having a lumen passing there through. A wire guide is slidably disposed within the lumen of the guide catheter. The system further includes a steering member fixedly secured to a proximal end of the wire guide and a proximal hub secured to a proximal end of the guide catheter. The system further includes a recessed handle having a first recess for fixedly receiving the proximal hub of the guide catheter and a second recess for receiving the steering member, the second recess being dimensioned to permit axial and rotational movement of the steering member while disposed in the second recess.

Claims (42)

1. A system for dilating tissue of a drainage pathway of a sinus cavity of a patient comprising:

a guide catheter releasably secured to a distal end of a handle, wherein the handle includes a proximal half and a distal half, and wherein the handle defines a recess that opens along a longitudinal length of a side surface of the handle and wherein the recess extends along both the proximal half and the distal half of the handle;

a steering device configured to slide along the recess in a direction parallel to a major longitudinal axis of the handle and further configured to rotate;

a wire guide extending through the guide catheter and the steering device, wherein rotation of the steering device effectuates rotation of the wire guide through complete revolutions relative to the guide catheter while the steering device is positioned along the recess; and

a balloon catheter comprising an inflatable balloon, wherein the balloon catheter defines a wire guide lumen, wherein the wire guide is configured to extend through the wire guide lumen, and wherein the balloon catheter is configured for translation over the wire guide and out a distal end of the guide catheter.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the proximal end of the guide catheter includes a hub and wherein the distal end of the handle comprises a hub recess configured to receive the hub.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the guide catheter is releasably secured to the hub recess by at least one of detents, tabs, or frictional fit.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the steering device is textured.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a light emitting elongate member configured to emit light within a sinus cavity.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the light emitting elongate member is a fiber optic catheter configured to be advanced over the wire guide.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the emitted light has a brightness sufficient to be viewed external to the patient to confirm the location of the wire guide within the sinus cavity.

8. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a directable endoscope, and wherein the directable endoscope comprises a knob disposed thereon and configured to direct a viewing field of the endoscope.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein sliding the steering device distally along the recess advances the wire guide out of the distal end of the guide catheter.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wire guide extends through the recess.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the wire guide extends out a proximal end of the handle.

12. A system for dilating tissue of a drainage pathway of a sinus cavity of a patient comprising:

a guide catheter releasably secured to a distal end of a handle, the handle defining a recess that opens along a longitudinal length of a side surface of the handle;

a steering device configured to slide along the recess in a direction parallel to a major longitudinal axis of the handle and further configured to rotate;

a wire guide extending through the guide catheter and the steering device, wherein rotation of the steering device effectuates rotation of the wire guide through complete revolutions while the steering device is positioned along the recess, and wherein sliding the steering device distally along the recess advances the wire guide out of a distal end of the guide catheter; and

a balloon catheter comprising an inflatable balloon, wherein the balloon catheter defines a wire guide lumen, wherein the wire guide is configured to extend through the wire guide lumen, and wherein the balloon catheter is configured for translation over the wire guide and out a distal end of the guide catheter.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the proximal end of the guide catheter includes a hub and the distal end of the handle comprises a hub recess configured to receive the hub.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the guide catheter is releasably secured to the hub recess by at least one of detents, tabs, or a frictional fit.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein a portion of the steering device is textured.

16. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a light emitting elongate member configured to emit light within a sinus cavity.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the light emitting elongate member is a fiber optic catheter configured to be advanced over the wire guide.

18. The system of claim 16 , wherein the emitted light has a brightness sufficient to be viewed external to the patient to confirm the location of the wire guide within the sinus cavity.

19. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a directable endoscope, wherein the directable endoscope comprises a knob disposed thereon and configured to direct a viewing field of the endoscope.

20. The system of claim 12 , wherein the wire guide extends through the recess.

21. The system of claim 12 , wherein the wire guide extends out a proximal end of the handle.

22. A system for dilating tissue of a drainage pathway of a sinus cavity of a patient comprising:

a guide catheter releasably secured to a distal end of a handle, the handle defining a recess that opens along a longitudinal length of a side surface of the handle;

a steering device configured to slide along the recess in a direction parallel to a major longitudinal axis of the handle and further configured to rotate;

a wire guide extending through the each of the guide catheter, the recess, and the steering device, wherein rotation of the steering device effectuates rotation of the wire guide through complete revolutions while the steering device is positioned along the recess; and

a balloon catheter comprising an inflatable balloon, wherein the balloon catheter defines a wire guide lumen, wherein the wire guide is configured to extend through the wire guide lumen, and wherein the balloon catheter is configured for translation over the wire guide and out a distal end of the guide catheter.

23. The system of claim 22 , wherein the proximal end of the guide catheter includes a hub and the distal end of the handle comprises a hub recess configured to receive the hub.

24. The system of claim 23 , wherein the guide catheter is releasably secured to the hub recess by at least one of detents, tabs, or a frictional fit.

25. The system of claim 22 , wherein a portion of the steering device is textured.

26. The system of claim 22 , further comprising a light emitting elongate member configured to emit light within a sinus cavity.

27. The system of claim 26 , wherein the light emitting elongate member is a fiber optic catheter configured to be advanced over the wire guide.

28. The system of claim 26 , wherein the emitted light has a brightness sufficient to be viewed external to the patient to confirm the location of the wire guide within the sinus cavity.

29. The system of claim 22 , wherein sliding the steering device distally along the recess advances the wire guide out of the distal end of the guide catheter.

30. The system of claim 22 , wherein the wire guide extends out a proximal end of the handle.
