Abstract

A computer device and method for processing data to determine suggested modifications to the policy terms or conditions contingent upon informatic data relating to habits and activities of inhabitants of an insured property or location. Informatic data relating to an insured property or location is electronically received from at least one informatic sensor device and is analyzed to determine behavioral habits and activities of one or more inhabitants associated with the insured property so as to identify one or more risks associated with the insured property or location. Electronic data is received for one or more terms of an insurance policy associated with the insured property and is analyzed to determine suggested modifications to the policy terms or conditions based upon the determined behavioral habits and activities of the one or more inhabitants associated with the insured property.

Claims (22)

1. A sensor system for capturing data, the system comprising:

a plurality of sensor devices each configured to capture data relating to inhabitants located in a dwelling, each sensor device having a transmitter with an associated IP address coupled to a wireless network for transmitting the captured data, wherein the sensor devices comprise a motion sensor configured to capture data associated with a number of inhabitants located in the dwelling and an appliance sensor configured to capture data associated with use of one or more appliances within the dwelling;

a data storage component wirelessly coupled to each of the plurality of sensors devices via the IP address of the transmitter for each of the sensor devices wherein the data storage component is configured to aggregate captured inhabitant data regarding the dwelling received from each of the sensor devices;

a communication component coupled to the data storage component configured to encrypt and transmit the aggregated captured encrypted data via a network;

a computer server coupled to the communication device, via the network, and programmed to:

receive captured encrypted data from the motion sensor regarding inhabitants located in the dwelling, wherein the motion sensor comprises passive infra-red detectors configured to detect simultaneous motion patterns at a plurality of points within the dwelling;

determine a number of inhabitants located in the dwelling based on the received captured encrypted data from the motion sensor;

generate a first instruction configured to command the appliance sensor to capture and transmit data associated with usage of the one or more appliances within the dwelling comprising a cooking activity pattern associated with the inhabitants, wherein the first instruction alters a frequency of reading associated with the appliance sensor by commanding an immediate reading, and wherein the cooking pattern corresponds to a time value associated with the one or more appliances remaining unattended;

upon receiving the captured encrypted data from the appliance sensor, determine a usage value based on the number of inhabitants located in the dwelling and the received captured encrypted data form the appliance sensor; and

generate a second instruction configured to display a notification corresponding to the determined usage value on at least one of the appliance sensor and the motion sensor, whereby the computer server modifies at least one dataset associated with the dwelling based on the usage value.

2. A sensor system as recited in claim 1 wherein the computer server is further programmed to send command signals to the one or more of the plurality of sensor devices providing instructions regarding capture and transmission of data.

3. The sensor system as recited in claim 1 wherein the computer server is further configured to perform suggested modifications to an insurance policy associated with the dwelling if the determined the number inhabitants located in the dwelling satisfies a prescribed criteria.

4. The sensor system as recited in claim 3 wherein modifying the insurance policy comprises an action selected from the group consisting of: reducing a premium for the policy, reducing a deductible for the policy, increasing a coverage amount of the policy, adding a coverage type to the policy, and amending a coverage type of the policy.

5. The sensor system as recited in claim 1 wherein the plurality of sensor devices comprises one or more of following detection sensor devices: motion; temperature; humidity; gas or water leak; wind speed; electrical system; structural; environmental; and camera.

6. The sensor system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the determined number of inhabitants located in the dwelling relate to usage of the one or more appliances associated with the dwelling.

7. The sensor system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the captured encrypted data from the appliance sensor comprises daily rest-activity patterns associated with the inhabitants located in the dwelling.

8. The sensor system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the captured encrypted data from the appliance sensor comprises daily cooking activities patterns associated with the inhabitants located in the dwelling.

9. The sensor system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the captured encrypted data from the appliance sensor comprises daily water consumption patterns associated with the inhabitants located in the dwelling.

10. The sensor system as recited in claim 1 , wherein captured encrypted data from the appliance sensor comprises daily energy consumption patterns associated with the inhabitants located in the dwelling.

11. The sensor system as recited in claim 6 , wherein the inhabitant data captured by the sensor devices is located within a range that includes the dwelling and a portion of land on which the dwelling is situated.

12. The computer system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of sensor devices comprises at least one of a motion sensor, a water pressure sensor, a water flow sensor, or a camera device.

13. An improved computer system having a computer server coupled to a database via a network that stores electronic sensor data regarding inhabitants within a dwelling captured from one or more sensor devices associated with the dwelling comprising a motion sensor configured to capture data associated with a number of inhabitants located in the dwelling and an appliance sensor configured to capture data associated with use of one or more appliances within the dwelling, wherein the motion sensor comprises passive infra-red detectors configured to detect simultaneous motion patterns at various points within the dwelling comprising a cooking activity pattern, wherein the improvement comprises analyzing the captured sensor data from the motion sensor to determine a number of inhabitants associated with a dwelling, generating an instruction to command the appliance sensor to capture and transmit data associated with usage of the one or more appliances within the dwelling comprising a cooking activity pattern associated with the inhabitants, wherein the first instruction alters a frequency of reading associated with the appliance sensor by commanding an immediate reading, and wherein the cooking pattern corresponds to a time value associated with the one or more appliances remaining unattended, receiving the captured sensor data from the appliance sensor, and utilizing the received captured data form the motion sensor and the appliance sensor to determine and display a usage factor associated with the dwelling, on at least one of the appliance sensor and the motion sensor, whereby the computer system modifies at least one dataset based on the usage value.
