Abstract

The present invention provides a compound represented by general formula (1) as well as a liquid crystal composition containing this compound and a liquid crystal display using this liquid crystal composition. Using the compound represented by general formula (1) as a component of a liquid crystal composition makes it possible to obtain a liquid crystal composition having a low viscosity (η), a high Δn, suitable T -i , high miscibility with other liquid crystal compounds, and presenting a liquid crystal phase over a wide temperature range. This is therefore extremely useful as a structural component of a liquid crystal composition for a liquid crystal display requiring a high speed response.

Claims (13)

1. A compound of general formula (1-1),

wherein in the formula, R 1 represents an alkyl group having a carbon atom number of 1 to 15 or an alkenyl group having a carbon atom number of 2 to 15, in which one group of —CH 2 —, or two or more groups of —CH 2 — not adjacent to each other can be replaced with a group of —O—, —S—, —COO—, —OCO— or —CO—, in which the hydrogen atom in these groups can be replaced with fluorine atom,

R 3 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having a carbon atom number of 1 to 3, in which one group of —CH 2 —, or two or more groups of —CH 2 — not adjacent to each other can be replaced with a group of —O—, —S—, —COO—, —OCO— or —CO—, in which the hydrogen atom in the alkyl group can be replaced with a fluorine atom,

A 1 is selected from the groups consisting of:

at least one of the A 1 groups is selected from the groups consisting of:

Z 1 represents —CH 2 O—, —OCH 2 —, —CF 2 O—, —OCF 2 —, —COO—, —OCO—, —CH 2 CH 2 —, —CF 2 CF 2 —, —CH═CH—, —CF═CF—, or a single bond;

X represents a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom;

m represents 1 to 4, in which when m is 2 to 4, and plural A 1 groups exist, said plural A 1 group can be the same as or different from each other; and when m is 2 to 4, and plural Z 1 groups exist, said plural Z 1 groups can be the same as or different from each other.

2. The compound according to claim 1 , wherein in the general formula (1), X represents the hydrogen atom or the fluorine atom.

3. The compound according to claim 1 , wherein in the general formula (1), Z 1 represents —CH 2 O—, —OCH 2 —, —CH 2 CH 2 — or a single bond.

4. The compound according to claim 1 , wherein in the general formula (1), R 1 represents an alkyl group having a carbon atom number of 1 to 6, or an alkenyl group having a carbon atom number of from 2 to 6.

5. A composition comprising one kind or two or more kinds of the compounds of claim 1 .

6. A liquid crystal display element using the composition of claim 5 .
