Abstract

System and method for identifying speeding violations, comprising determining a current speed and a current location of a vehicle, determining a posted speed limit for the current location from a speed-by-street database, comparing the current speed of the vehicle to the posted speed limit, and evaluating whether the current speed exceeds the posted speed limit. Errors are identified in the speed-by-street database by storing a plurality of speeding violation records, wherein the speeding violation records each include a speeding event location; analyzing the speeding violation records to identify one or more speeding event locations having multiple speeding violations; comparing a posted speed limit at the one or more speeding event locations having multiple speeding violations to corresponding speed limit data in the speed-by-street database; and identifying one or more speed limit entries in the speed-by-street database that do not match the posted speed limit.

periodically send a group speeding record notification for the plurality of different speeding violations to the remote computing system according to a periodic reporting interval; and

send a notification for a particular record of the different speeding violation records to the remote computing system independent of the group speeding record notification upon determining that a speed of the vehicle associated with the particular record exceeds a threshold speed by a predetermined amount.

2. The vehicle speed monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more input devices includes a geo-location device.

3. The vehicle speed monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more input devices includes an on-board diagnostic system.

7. The vehicle speed monitoring device of claim 4 , wherein the output device is a data communication interface.

8. The device of claim 1 , further comprising the processor being configured to determine current road conditions for the received location and adjust the threshold speed based on the current road conditions before considering whether the vehicle exceeds the threshold speed.

9. The station of claim 8 , wherein the current road conditions for the location includes at least a speed of the road.

10. The vehicle speed monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the timer is started when the warning to the driver.

11. The vehicle speed monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the first threshold speed is a predetermined amount or percentage above the determined speed limit of the determined location, and wherein the amount of time is a plurality of seconds.

12. The vehicle speed monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle speed monitoring device is further configured to limit a speed of the vehicle with one or more governor devices when it is determined that the speed of the vehicle exceeds continues to exceed the first threshold subsequent to the warning being generated and subsequent to sending the notification signal to the remote computing system.

13. The vehicle speed monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the notification includes the distance traveled while the vehicle exceeded the first or second threshold.

14. A method implemented by a vehicle monitoring device for monitoring speed of a vehicle, the vehicle monitoring device having an interface for receiving information from one or more input devices, a timer, and a processor, the method comprising:

determining a speed and location of a vehicle using the received information;

comparing speed limit mapping data to the determined location of the vehicle to determine a posted speed limit corresponding to the determined location of the vehicle;

determining a first threshold speed and a second threshold speed, the first and second threshold speeds corresponding to the determined location of the vehicle;

performing an action if the speed of the vehicle exceeds one or more of the first threshold speed or the second threshold speed, by generating a warning to a driver when the speed of the vehicle exceeds the determined first threshold speed and generating a notification signal to a remote computing system when it is determined that the driver has failed to reduce the speed of the vehicle within an amount of time after the warning is generated or when it is determined that the speed of the vehicle exceeds the second threshold speed, wherein the notification includes at least a location of a worst excess speed over the first or second threshold speed;
