Abstract

A fluid filtration apparatus, which includes a plurality of optical fibers each having a length, wherein one or more of the plurality of optical fibers exhibits frustrated total internal reflection, thereby emitting light along the length of one or more of the optical fibers, in combination with a photocatalyst disposed on the plurality of optical fibers and a light source interconnected to the plurality of optical fibers.

Claims (20)

1. A method of purifying a fluid flow, the method comprising:

(a) sensing a magnitude of a velocity of the fluid flow flowing through a fluid filtration apparatus comprising:

a plurality of optical fibers each having a length, the plurality of optical fibers comprising a first assembly wherein one or more of the plurality of optical fibers exhibits frustrated total internal reflection thereby emitting light along the length of one or more of the optical fibers;

a photocatalyst disposed on the plurality of optical fibers;

a light source interconnected to the plurality of optical fibers;

a second assembly comprising a fabric including a plurality of fibers, wherein one or more of the plurality of fibers comprises the photocatalyst disposed thereon; and

a third assembly comprising a fluid filtration medium, wherein the second assembly is disposed between the first assembly and the third assembly; and

(b) adjusting an intensity of a light source based on the magnitude of the velocity.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the magnitude is sensed by a flow sensor.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the intensity of the light source is adjusted through an amplifier.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein a controller, interconnected to both the amplifier and the flow sensor, responds to a signal transmitted from the flow sensor by adjusting the intensity of the light source through the amplifier.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising the controller responding to the signal by adjusting a wavelength of light emitted by the light source.

6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising the controller responding to the signal by adjusting the duration of the light source.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting the intensity of the light source activates the photocatalyst.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the photocatalyst oxidizes a contaminant present in the fluid flow.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluid flow comprises air.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluid flow comprises water.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the photocatalyst comprises at least one of titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, strontium titanate, tin dioxide, niobium pentoxide, ferrous oxide, substituted phthalocyanine complexes, or substituted porphyrin complexes.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of optical fibers are configured in at least one of a two-dimensional grid, a three-dimensional grid, a mesh, a honeycomb stricture, a fin-like structure, a filamentous structure, an intertwined structure, or a woven structure.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the optical fibers of the plurality of optical fibers includes a functional form of a radial distribution of the refractive index selected from the group consisting of a step-like functional form, a monotonic functional form, and a quadratic functional form.
