Abstract

A method and apparatus for an adaptive Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) streaming service using metadata of media content are provided. The media content may include a sequence of one or more periods. Each of the periods may include one or more representations. The metadata may include information used to describe a relationship between the representations, and include information for terminals having different display bit depths.

Claims (74)

1. A method for providing media content performed by a DASH((Dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP) client, the method comprising:

receiving metadata of media content, the metadata comprising one or more periods;

accessing segments of the media content based on information provided by the metadata; and

decoding and rendering data of the media content that is included in the segments,

wherein each of the one or more periods comprises one or more adaptation sets,

wherein each of the one or more adaptation sets comprises one or more representations,

wherein each of the one or more representation comprises one or more sub-representations,

wherein the one or more adaptation sets, the one or more representations, and the one or more sub-representation share common attributes and elements,

wherein all of the representations included in a single adaptation set represent the same media content components, and comprise one or more media streams that are determined to be perceptually equivalent,

wherein the one or more representations are arranged in an adaptation set based on properties of media content components present in the representations, and

wherein the properties of the media content components comprise:

1) an attribute related to language,

2) an attribute related to a media component type,

3) an attribute related to a picture aspect ratio,

4) an element related to a role property which specifies information on a role annotation scheme,

5) an element related to an accessibility property which specifies information on an accessibility scheme,

6) an element related to a viewpoint property which specifies information on a viewpoint annotation scheme, and

7) an element related to a rating property which specifies information on a ration rating scheme.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein information included in at least one of the one or more representations indicates an intended use of the at least one of the representations, and the intended use comprises at least one of a sign language, a subtitle, a caption, or a description.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein information included in at least one of the one or more representations comprises an attribute providing a reference to an external Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG)-21 Digital Item Adaptation (DIA).

4. A method for providing media content performed by a server, the method comprising:

performing hosting on a DASH(Dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP) segment; and

transmitting metadata of media content to a client, the metadata comprising one or more periods,

wherein each of the one or more periods comprises one or more adaptation sets,

wherein each of the one or more adaptation sets comprises one or more representations,

wherein each of the one or more representations comprises one or more sub-representations of the media,

wherein the one or more adaptation sets, the one or more representations, and the one or more sub-representation share common attributes and elements,

wherein all of the representations included in a single adaptation set represent the same media content components, and comprise one or more media streams that are determined to be perceptually equivalent,

wherein the one or more representations are arranged in an adaptation set based on properties of media content components present in the representations,

wherein the properties of the media content components include

1) an attribute related to language,

2) an attribute related to a media component type,

3) an attribute related to a picture aspect ratio,

4) an element related to a role property which specifies information on a role annotation scheme,

5) an element related to an accessibility property which specifies information on an accessibility scheme,

6) an element related to a viewpoint property which specifies information on a viewpoint annotation scheme, and

7) an element related to a rating property which specifies information on a rating scheme.

5. A DASH((Dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP) client, comprising:

an access engine to receive metadata of media content, to receive segments of the media content based on information provided by the metadata, and to decode data of the media content that is included in the segments, the metadata comprising one or more periods; and

a media engine to receive the data of the media content from the access engine, and to output the media content,

wherein each of the one or more periods comprises one or more adaptation sets,

wherein each of the one or more adaptation sets comprises one or more representations,

wherein each of the one or more representations comprises one or more sub-representations,

wherein the one or more adaptation sets, the one or more representations, and the one or more sub-representation share common attributes and elements,

wherein all of the representations included in a single adaptation set represent the same media content components, and comprise one or more media streams that are determined to be perceptually equivalent,

wherein the one or more representations are arranged in an adaptation set based on properties of media content components present in the representations, and

wherein the properties of the media content components comprise:

1) an attribute related to language,

2) an attribute related to a media component type,

3) an attribute related to a picture aspect ratio,

4) an element related to a role property which specifies information on a role annotation scheme,

5) an element related to an accessibility property which specifies information on an accessibility scheme,

6) an element related to a viewpoint property which specifies information on a viewpoint annotation scheme, and

7) an element related to a rating property which specifies information on a ration rating scheme.

6. The terminal of claim 5 , wherein information included in at least one of the one or more representations indicates an intended use of the at least one of the representations, and the intended use comprises at least one of a sign language, a subtitle, a caption, or a description.

7. The terminal of claim 5 , wherein information included in at least one of the one or more representations comprises an attribute providing a reference to an external Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG)-21 Digital Item Adaptation (DIA).

8. A server, comprising:

a processor configured to:

perform hosting on a DASH(Dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP) segment; and

transmit metadata of media content to a client, the metadata comprising one or more periods,

wherein each of the periods comprises one or more adaptation sets,

wherein each of the one or more adaptation sets comprises one or more representations of the media,

wherein the representation comprises one or more sub-representations,

wherein the adaptation sets, representations, and sub-representation share common attributes and elements,

wherein all of the one or more representations included in a single adaptation set represent the same media content components, and include one or more media streams that are determined to be perceptually equivalent,

wherein the one or more representations are arranged in an adaptation set based on properties of media content components present in the representations,

wherein the properties of the media content components comprise:

1) an attribute related to language,

2) an attribute related to a media component type,

3) an attribute related to a picture aspect ratio,

4) an element related to a role property which specifies information on a role annotation scheme,

5) an element related to an accessibility property which specifies information on an accessibility scheme,
