Abstract

This disclosure provides a system for securing a bone to a rod, the system comprising a ligature, a body, and two fasteners. The ligature has two free ends and an intermediate portion therebetween, the intermediate portion being configured to engage a bone. A portion of a rod can be fastened to the body using one of the fasteners. The ligature can be fastened to the body using another one of the fasteners. The two fasteners are distinct from one another and are adapted to fasten two free end portions of the ligature to the body independently from fastening the portion of the rod to the body.

Claims (18)

1. A system for securing a bone to a rod, comprising:

a conformable elongate member having a first free end portion, a second free end portion, and an intermediate portion extending therebetween, the intermediate portion being configured to engage a bone;

a main body having a first opening for receiving the first free end portion, a second opening for receiving the second free end portion, and a passageway extending through the main body transverse to the first opening and the second opening, the passageway being configured to receive a rod therein;

a first threaded fastener configured to secure the first free end portion and the second free end portion to the main body; and

a second threaded fastener configured to secure the rod within the passageway.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first threaded fastener comprises a compression member that is engageable with at least a portion of an outer surface of the main body between a proximal end and a distal end thereof.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the main body comprises a compression part disposed at the distal end thereof for engaging the compression member, wherein the first opening and the second opening extend from the distal end of the main body to a point at or proximal to an upper surface of the compression part.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the compression part comprises a flange protruding on at least opposing lateral faces of the main body.

5. The system of claim 3 , wherein the main body further comprises a thread disposed on the outer surface of the main body proximal to the compression part.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the compression member comprises a nut having an internal thread for engaging the thread disposed on the outer surface of the main body.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the main body further comprises a first recess and a second recess disposed in opposing lateral faces of the main body proximal to the compression part and in communication with the first opening and the second opening, and further comprising a first rotating piece and a second rotating piece disposed within the first recess and the second recess, respectively.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein movement of the compression member in a first direction relative to the compression part urges the first rotating piece and the second rotating piece into a respective one of the first recess and the second recess to secure the respective first free end portion and second free end portion of the conformable elongate member.

9. The system of claim 3 , wherein advancement of the compression member towards the upper surface of the compression part secures the first free end portion and the second free end portion of the conformable elongate member.

10. The system of claim 2 , wherein the first opening and the second opening are spaced apart from each other on the outer surface of the main body.

11. The system of claim 2 , wherein the first opening and the second opening are independent of each other.

12. The system of claim 2 . wherein the rod is securable within the passageway with the second threaded fastener independently of securing the first free end portion and the second free end portion with the compressive member.

13. The system of claim 2 , wherein the intermediate portion of the conformable elongate member extends from the main body in a direction transverse to a longitudinal axis of the rod.

14. The system of claim 2 , wherein the intermediate portion of the conformable elongate member forms a loop extending away from the main body, the loop for surrounding the bone.
