Abstract

A discrete and safe automated insect monitoring system includes a housing, an interior chamber within the housing, and a light source arranged within the housing to illuminate at least a portion of a floor surface of the interior chamber. A multi-pixel optical sensor is arranged within the housing so that a field of view of the sensor comprehends a substantial portion of the floor surface. A processing circuit arranged within the housing receives optical data from the multi-pixel optical sensor, analyzes the optical data to detect the intrusion of an insect or other object into the interior chamber by comparing most recently received optical data to previously received optical data, and generates an indication in response to detecting the intrusion of an insect or other object. Detection and/or classification results can be wirelessly forwarded to another device, to alert appropriate personnel.

Claims (16)

1. An insect trap, comprising:

a housing having an opening on at least one side of the housing; and

a first chamber portion with an interior chamber, the first chamber portion being configured to slidably engage with a first opening of the housing, such that the interior chamber of the first chamber portion is arranged within the housing when the first chamber portion is fully inserted into the first opening, the first chamber portion further comprising a crevice configured to provide access to the interior chamber from outside the insect trap when the first chamber portion is fully inserted into the opening, and the first chamber portion further comprising a first transparent side configured to permit visual inspection of the interior chamber when the first chamber portion is at least partly removed from the opening.

The insect trap of claim 1 , further comprising a first translating panel coupled to the first chamber portion and configured to translate between a first position and a second position, wherein the first translating panel covers the crevice in the first position and does not cover the crevice in the second position.

3. The insect trap of claim 2 , further comprising:

a second chamber portion with an interior chamber, the second chamber portion being configured to slidably engage with a second opening of the housing, such that the interior chamber of the second chamber portion is arranged within the housing when the second chamber portion is fully inserted into the second opening, the second chamber portion further comprising a crevice configured to provide access to the interior chamber from outside the insect trap when the second chamber portion is fully inserted into the opening, and the second chamber portion further comprising a transparent side configured to permit visual inspection of the interior chamber when the second chamber portion is at least partly removed from the opening; and

a second translating panel coupled to the second chamber portion and configured to translate between a first position and a second position, wherein the second translating panel covers the crevice of the second chamber portion in the first position and does not cover the crevice of the second chamber portion in the second position.

The insect trap of claim 3 , wherein the first and second translating panels each comprise one or more perforations positioned to permit airflow through the crevice of the respective chamber portion when the translating panel covers the crevice, wherein the first and second chamber portions each comprise one or more perforations on one or more sides of the respective chamber portion, and wherein an interior of the housing is configured to provide a low-impedance airflow channel between the first and second chamber portion.

5. The insect trap of claim 3 , wherein the housing comprises a textured surface portion on the exterior of the housing and extending from at or near the crevice of the first chamber portion to at or near the crevice of the second chamber portion.

6. The insect trap of claim 5 , wherein said textured surface portion is surrounded at least partly by one or more smooth surface portions or sticky surface portions.

7. The insect trap of claim 5 , comprising an adhesive-backed tape arranged on the exterior of the housing, the adhesive-backed tape providing at least a portion of the textured surface portion.

8. The insect trap of claim 2 , further comprising a latching tab coupled to the translating panel, wherein the latching tab is arranged to engage the housing and restrict withdrawal of the chamber from the housing when the translating panel is in the second position.

9. The insect trap of claim 1 , wherein the first chamber portion further comprises a second transparent side or a translucent side, arranged opposite the first transparent side.

The insect trap of claim 1 , further comprising a lure dispenser, the lure dispenser comprising a reservoir configured to hold a liquid, gel, or solid compound, and further comprising a movable lid or valve configured to selectively engage an aperture in the lure dispenser so as to substantially seal the aperture.

11. The insect trap of claim 10 , wherein the lid or valve is mechanically coupled to a switch, button, or knob accessible from outside the housing and configured to move the movable lid or valve so as to engage the aperture in the reservoir.

12. The insect trap of claim 10 , further comprising non-viable insect harborage material disposed in the reservoir.
