Abstract

A graphical user interface (GUI) is provided for manipulating a presentation of a region of interest within visual information displayed on a display screen of a computer display system. The GUI includes: a first bounding shape surrounding the focal region; a second bounding shape surrounding the shoulder region; a base outline; a pickup point; a slide bar; a move area within the region of interest; at least one zoom area; and, a zoom button.

Claims (28)

1. A method for generating a presentation of a region of interest within an original image for display on a display screen, comprising:

transforming said original image with a distortion function to produce an initial presentation, said distortion function having a focal region for said region of interest at least partially surrounded by a shoulder region in turn being surrounded by an external region, said distortion function having a magnification being uniform for said focal region and varying for said shoulder region such that said distortion function is continuous from said external region through said shoulder region to said focal region;

providing means for selecting a parameter for adjusting said distortion function;

receiving said parameter through said means;

wherein said parameter adjusts said distortion function by at least one of: increasing said magnification such that said focal region fills said display screen; increasing said magnification such that said focal and shoulder regions fill said display screen; and, applying said magnification uniformly to said focal, shoulder, and external regions;

adjusting said distortion function with said parameter and transforming said original image with said adjusted distortion function to directly produce and define content for said presentation; and,

displaying said presentation on said display screen.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said parameter shapes said distortion function by adjusting said magnification.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said means for selecting is one of a zoom button and a zoom area.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein said one of a zoom button and a zoom area includes one of a first zoom button and a first zoom area positioned over said focal region for increasing said magnification such that said focal region fills said display screen, one of a second zoom button and a second zoom area positioned over said shoulder region for increasing said magnification such that said focal and shoulder regions fill said display screen, and one of a third zoom button and a third zoom area positioned over said external region for applying said magnification uniformly to said focal, shoulder, and external regions.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein at least one of said first, second, and third zoom areas is co-extensive with said focal, shoulder, and external regions, respectively.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein said means for selecting is a slide bar icon for adjusting said magnification.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein said transforming further comprises displacing said original image onto said distortion function and perspectively projecting said displacing onto a plane in a direction aligned with a viewpoint for said region of interest.

8. A method for generating a presentation of a region of interest within an original image for display on a display screen, comprising:

transforming said original image with a distortion function to produce an initial presentation by displacing said original image onto said distortion function and perspectively projecting said displacing onto a plane in a direction aligned with a viewpoint for said region of interest, said distortion function having a focal region for said region of interest at least partially surrounded by a shoulder region in turn being surrounded by an external region, said distortion function having a magnification being uniform for said focal region and varying for said shoulder region such that said distortion function is continuous from said external region through said shoulder region to said focal region;

providing means for selecting a parameter for adjusting said distortion function;

receiving said parameter through said means;

adjusting said distortion function with said parameter and transforming said original image with said adjusted distortion function to directly produce and define content for said presentation; and,

displaying said presentation on said display screen.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein said parameter shapes said distortion function by adjusting said magnification.

10. The method of claim 8 wherein said means for selecting is at least one zoom button icon.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein said zoom button icon is located on a tool bar.

12. The method of claim 10 wherein said zoom button icon is positioned in said external region.

13. The method of claim 8 wherein said means for selecting is at least one zoom menu item.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein said zoom menu item is located on a pull-down menu.

15. The method of claim 8 wherein said parameter shapes said distortion function by increasing said magnification such that said focal region fills said display screen.

16. The method of claim 8 wherein said parameter shapes said distortion function by increasing said magnification such that said focal and shoulder regions fill said display screen.

17. The method of claim 8 wherein said parameter shapes said distortion function by applying said magnification uniformly to said focal, shoulder, and external regions.
