Abstract

A motor is constructed from a stator assembly including a stator having multiple conductors that create a plurality of magnetic fields when electrical current is conducted by the conductors and a body of a phase change material such as a thermoplastic substantially encapsulating the stator. A rotatable hub having a magnet connected thereto is in operable proximity to the stator. The motor also includes a shaft, a bearing surrounding the shaft and one of the bearing or shaft being fixed to the stator assembly and the other of the bearing or shaft being fixed to the rotatable hub. Hard disc drives using the motor, and methods of developing and constructing the motor and hard disc drives are also disclosed.

Claims (71)

1. A motor for a disc drive comprising:

a) a shaft;

b) at least one magnet;

c) a bearing surrounding the shaft;

d) at least one conductor forming at least one pole; and

e) an injection molded thermoplastic forming a monolithic body that substantially encapsulates the at least one conductor, there being a gap between the body encapsulating the at least one conductor and the at least one magnet, the body being configured to align the shaft and bearing with respect to one another so that the gap between the at least one magnet and the body encapsulating the at least one conductor is at a predetermined distance, wherein an insert is substantially encapsulated within the body and the insert is part of the bearing.

2. The motor of claim 1 wherein the shaft is fixed relative to the body.

3. The motor of claim 1 wherein the shaft is freely rotatable relative to the body.

4. The motor of claim 1 wherein mounting features are formed in the body to mount the motor to a hard disc drive.

5. The motor of claim 1 wherein the gap is approximately 0.005 inches.

6. The motor of claim 1 wherein the gap is approximately 0.003 inches.

7. A motor for a disc drive comprising:

a) a shaft;

b) at least one magnet;

c) a bearing surrounding the shaft;

d) at least one conductor forming at least one pole; and

e) an injection molded thermoplastic forming a monolithic body that substantially encapsulates the at least one conductor, there being a gap between the body encapsulating the at least one conductor and the at least one magnet, the body being configured to align the shaft and bearing with respect to one another so that the gap between the at least one magnet and the body encapsulating the at least one conductor is at a predetermined distance, wherein an insert is substantially encapsulated within the body and the insert comprises a magnet.

8. A high speed spindle motor for a disc drive comprising:

a) a shaft;

b) a disc support member attached to the shaft;

c) a bearing disposed around the shaft;

d) a stator; and

e) a monolithically formed body that substantially encapsulates the stator, the monolithically formed body surrounding the bearings and the shaft, wherein a solid insert is substantially encapsulated within the body, wherein the bearing includes an upper bearing and a lower bearing and the body concentrically surrounds the upper bearing and the lower bearing.

9. A high speed spindle motor for a disc drive comprising:

a) a shaft;

b) a disc support member attached to the shaft;

c) a bearing disposed around the shaft;

d) a stator; and

e) a monolithically formed body that substantially encapsulates the stator, the monolithically formed body surrounding the bearings and the shaft, wherein a solid insert is substantially encapsulated within the body and wherein the solid insert comprises an enhancement magnet.

10. A high speed spindle motor for a disc drive comprising:

a) a shaft;

b) a disc support member attached to the shaft;

c) a bearing disposed around the shaft;

d) a stator; and

e) a monolithically formed body that substantially encapsulates the stator, the monolithically formed body surrounding the bearings and the shaft, wherein a solid insert is substantially encapsulated within the body and wherein the solid insert comprises part of a magnetic bearing.

11. A high speed spindle motor for a disc drive comprising:

a) a shaft;

b) a disc support member attached to the shaft and including a permanent magnet;

c) a bearing surrounding the shaft;

d) a stator; and

e) a monolithically formed body that substantially encapsulates the stator, the body being configured to align the shaft, disc support member and bearing with respect to one another, wherein mounting features are formed in the body to mount the high speed motor to a hard disc drive.

12. A motor comprising:

a) a conductor substantially encapsulated within a body of thermoplastic;

b) one or more metal inserts encapsulated within the body

c) a bearing assembly; and

d) the thermoplastic having a coefficient of linear thermal expansion such that the phase change material contracts and expands at approximately the same rate as the one or more metal inserts.

13. The motor of claim 12 wherein the one or more metal inserts are part of the bearing assembly.

14. The motor of claim 12 wherein the one or more metal inserts are used to position the bearing assembly.

15. A motor comprising:

a) a shaft;

b) a bearing surrounding the shaft;

c) a rotor;

d) at least one conductor forming at least one pole; and

e) an injection molded thermoplastic forming a monolithic body that substantially encapsulates the at least one conductor and reduces the emission of audible noise by at least 2 decibels when compared with an un-encapsulated structure.

16. The motor of claim 15 wherein the reduction of audible noise is at least 5 decibels.

17. A motor stator assembly comprising:

a) a stator having at least one conductor that creates a magnetic field when electrical current is conducted by the conductor; and

b) a monolithic body of injection molded thermoplastic completely encapsulating the stator so that the monolithic body of thermoplastic completely covers the stator and no external surfaces of the stator are exposed.

18. The motor stator assembly of claim 17 wherein the thermoplastic has a thermal conductivity of at least 0.7 watts/meter ° K at 23° C.

19. The motor stator assembly of claim 17 wherein the thermoplastic has a coefficient of linear thermal expansion of less than 2×10 −5 in/in ° F. throughout the range of 0–250° F.

20. The motor stator assembly of claim 17 wherein the thermoplastic has a modulus of elasticity of at least 2,000,000 psi at 25° C.

21. The motor stator assembly of claim 17 wherein the thermoplastic is chosen to prevent a specific liquid from contacting the conductor.

22. The motor stator assembly of claim 21 wherein the liquid is primarily water.

23. The motor stator assembly of claim 21 wherein the liquid is primarily alcohol.

24. The motor stator assembly of claim 21 wherein the liquid is primarily a hydrocarbon.

25. A motor for a disc drive comprising:

a) a shaft;

b) at least one magnet;

c) a bearing surrounding the shaft;

d) at least one conductor forming at least one pole; and

e) an injection molded thermoplastic forming a monolithic body that substantially encapsulates the at least one conductor, there being a gap between the body encapsulating the at least one conductor and the at least one magnet, the body being configured to align the shaft and bearing with respect to one another so that the gap between the at least one magnet and the body encapsulating the at least one conductor is at a predetermined distance, wherein mounting features are formed in the body to mount the motor to a hard disc drive.
