Abstract

A method of making a texture-coated and/or insulation coated container from a flat paperboard blank in which a heat-hardenable liquid polymeric binder texturizing and/or insulating agent coating mixture is applied to one surface of the blank in a pattern of covered and open areas. This coating mixture is subjected to heat to cure the polymeric binder and expand the texturizing and/or insulating agent, optionally treated with moisture, and optionally heated to form the blank into the shape of a container, and the container produced by this method. The containers such as cups, plates, etc., are useful in food service. These containers have a coefficient of static friction which is about 0.2 to 2.0 and over and a kinetic coefficient of friction which is about 0.22 to 1.5.

Claims (12)

1 - 148 . (canceled)

149 . A paperboard characterized by improved bulk insulation comprising:

(a) cellulosic fibers;

(b) at least one bulk and porosity enhancing additive; and,

(c) size press applied binder coating, optionally including a pigment, adjacent both surfaces, of the paperboard and penetrating into the board a controlled extent;

wherein at least about twenty percent of the additive is distributed in the central layer of the paperboard and not more than about seventy-five percent of the additive is distributed on the periphery of the paperboard, with no periphery having more than twice the percent of the additive distributed in the central layer of the paperboard.

150 . The paperboard of claim 149 , wherein the paperboard has a basis weight in the range of about 10 to about 400 pounds per 3000 square foot ream.

151 . The paperboard of claim 149 , wherein the paperboard has a caliper in the range of about 0.008 to about 0.055 inches.

152 . The paperboard of claim 149 , wherein the additive is expanded microspheres.

153 . The paperboard of claim 152 , wherein the microspheres have a thermoplastic shell consisting of a copolymer of vinylidene chloride and acrylonitrile.

154 . The paperboard of claim 149 , wherein the paperboard has a density in the range of from at least about 3 to at least about 9 pounds per 3000 square foot ream at a thickness of 0.001 inches.

155 . The paperboard of claim 149 , wherein the paperboard has a Bendtsen smoothness of about 640.
