Abstract

An orthopaedic reamer assembly includes a reamer with a generally hemispherical shell having a concave side and at least one attachment feature associated with the concave side. A driver is attachable to the reamer. The driver includes a shaft with a reamer end. The reamer end removably attaches to at least one attachment feature.

Claims (18)

1. An orthopaedic reamer assembly, comprising:

a reamer including a generally hemispherical shell having a thin wall with a concave side and a convex side, and at least one attachment feature formed in said thin wall, at least one said attachment feature including at least one indent in said hemispherical shell, said at least one indent protruding on said concave side, said hemispherical shell including at least one cutting surface, said at least one attachment feature extending through said thin wall and in communication with both said concave side of said thin wall and said convex side of said thin wall, said hemispherical shell including at least one attachment slot, each said attachment slot adjacent a corresponding said indent, and at least one said attachment slot including a recess; and

a driver including a shaft with a reamer end, said reamer end removably attached to said at least one attachment feature.

2. The orthopaedic reamer assembly of claim 1 , wherein each said indent includes a base portion at approximately 90° to a wall portion.

3. The orthopaedic reamer assembly of claim 1 , further including a releasable collar disposed on said reamer end, said releasable collar including at least one groove releasably attachable with a corresponding said indent and at least one said attachment slot, at least one said groove having a complimentary shape with said corresponding indent, said releasable collar including at least one retaining pin releasably attachable with at least one said recess.

4. An orthopaedic reamer, comprising:

a hemispherical shell having a thin wall with a concave side and a convex side; and

at least one attachment feature formed in said thin wall, said hemispherical shell including at least one cutting surface, said at least one attachment feature extending through said thin wall and in communication with both said concave side of said thin wall and said convex side of said thin wall at least one said attachment feature including at least one indent in said hemispherical shell, said at least one indent protruding on said concave side, said hemispherical shell having at least one attachment slot for each said indent, each said attachment slot being adjacent a corresponding said indent, and at least one said attachment slot including a recess.

5. The orthopaedic reamer assembly of claim 4 , wherein each said indent includes a base portion at approximately 90° to a wall portion.

6. A method of attaching an orthopaedic reamer to a driver, comprising the steps of:

providing a reamer including a hemispherical shell having a thin wall with a concave side and a convex side, with at least one attachment feature formed in said thin wall, said hemispherical shell including at least one cutting surface, said at least one attachment feature extending through said thin wall and in communication with both said concave side of said thin wall and said convex side of said thin wall;

placing a concave side of a reamer on a reamer end of a driver; and

engaging said reamer end with at least one said reamer attachment feature including the sub-steps of:

aligning said attachment feature approximately with each of a retaining pin on said driver and a groove on said driver;

biasing a sleeve on said driver in an open position;

rotating slightly said reamer to engage said retaining pin in a recess on said attachment feature and to engage said attachment feature in said groove;

releasing said sleeve to a closed position; and

constraining said retaining pin in said recess thereby locking said reamer to said driver.
