Abstract

Adhesion of an adhesive to a substrate can be improved by incorporating into the substrate an adhesion-enhancing amount of an adhesion promoter.

Claims (20)

. A method of enhancing the adhesion of an adhesive to a substrate comprising incorporating into the substrate an adhesion-enhancing amount of an additive selected from the group consisting of polyethylene oxide, polypropylene oxide, poly(trimethylene oxide), poly(tetramethylene oxide), poly(tetrahydrofuran), polyphenylene oxide, polyethers, copolymers containing acrylic acid, copolymers containing methacrylic acid, copolymers containing itaconic acid, copolymers containing a carboxylic acid functional group and mixtures thereof.

. The method of claim 1 wherein the additive is incorporated at about 1.5 to about 4 wt %, based on the weight of the substrate.

. The method of claim 1 wherein the substrate is polymeric, paper or paperboard, a nonwoven, wood or wood composite, or cloth.

. The method of claim 1 , wherein the substrate is spandex.

. The method of claim 2 wherein the additive is incorporated at about 2 to about 3 wt %.

. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive is a hot melt adhesive.

. The method of claim 6 , wherein the substrate is spandex and the hot melt adhesive comprises a thermoplastic elastomer, a tackifying resin, and an ionomer resin.

. A substrate comprising an adhesion enhancing amount of at least one additive selected from the group consisting of polyethylene oxide, polypropylene oxide, poly(trimethylene oxide), poly(tetramethylene oxide), poly(tetrahydrofuran), polyphenylene oxide, polyethers, copolymers containing acrylic acid, copolymers containing methacrylic acid, copolymers containing itaconic acid, copolymers containing a carboxylic acid functional group and mixtures thereof.

. The substrate of claim 8 wherein the substrate is polymeric, paper or paperboard, a nonwoven, wood or wood composite, or cloth.

. The substrate of claim 8 wherein the substrate is spandex.

. The substrate of claim 8 further comprising an adhesive.

. The substrate of claim 11 wherein the adhesive is a hot melt adhesive comprising a thermoplastic elastomer, a tackifying resin, and an ionomer resin.

. A process for bonding a first substrate to a second substrate, comprising applying to at least the first substrate an adhesive, bringing at least the second substrate, which is the same or different from the first substrate, in contact with the adhesive present on the first substrate whereby said first and second substrates are bonded together, wherein at least one of said first and said second substrates comprises an adhesion enhancing amount of an additive selected from the group consisting of polyethylene oxide, polypropylene oxide, poly(trimethylene oxide), poly(tetramethylene oxide), poly(tetrahydrofuran), polyphenylene oxide, polyethers, copolymers containing acrylic acid, copolymers containing methacrylic acid, copolymers containing itaconic acid, copolymers containing a carboxylic acid functional group, and mixtures thereof.

. The process of claim 13 wherein the substrate is polymeric, paper or paperboard, a nonwoven, wood or wood composite, or cloth.

. The process of claim 13 wherein at least one of the first and second substrates is spandex.

. The process of claim 13 wherein the adhesive is a hot melt adhesive comprising a thermoplastic elastomer, a tackifying resin, and an ionomer resin.

. An article of manufacture comprising an adhesive and a substrate, wherein the substrate comprises an adhesion-enhancing amount of at least one additive selected from the group consisting of polyethylene oxide, polypropylene oxide, poly(trimethylene oxide), poly(tetramethylene oxide), poly(tetrahydrofuran), polyphenylene oxide, polyethers, copolymers containing acrylic acid, copolymers containing methacrylic acid, copolymers containing itaconic acid, copolymers containing a carboxylic acid functional group and mixtures thereof.

. The article of claim 17 which is a disposable absorbent article.

. The article of claim 17 wherein the substrate comprises spandex.

. The article of claim 19 wherein the wherein the adhesive is a hot melt adhesive comprising a thermoplastic elastomer, a tackifying resin and an ionomer resin.
