Abstract

Vehicle recorder systems are arranged in configured with a video camera, light-weight memory systems, and radio communications facility suitable for use in conjunction with an automobile. An automobile equipped with these video recorder systems used normally throughout the service today, provides a video record of unusual events which may occur from time-to-time. Events such as accidents, near-miss incidents, driving of use, among others, trigger a system to preserve video images collected before and after the moment of the event. Replay of these images yield information regarding cause and true nature of the event. These systems are particularly arranged about, and in support of fleet use of vehicles. That is, groups of vehicles are arranged and coupled together whereby a plurality of such vehicles may communicate with a common system providing a fleet manager advanced fleet management tools.

Claims (24)

1 ) Vehicle event recorders comprising:

a video camera arranged to capture images from the environments about the vehicle and convert optical energy to digital electronic signals;

a rewritable memory operable for storage of digital data representing video images;

a radio transceiver configured for two-way, wireless data communications; and

a microprocessor coupled with said video camera whereby the microprocessor receives electronic signals therefrom the video camera, the microprocessor being further coupled to the memory whereby processed electronic signals may be written to and stored in said memory and further coupled such that the microprocessor can transfer data stored in memory to an external system via said radio transceiver, said microprocessor and radio transceiver operable together to determine whether the vehicle event recorder is proximate to a suitable communications space, and in the case that it is, to execute a data transfer of memory to a download station.

2 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 1 , mounted to a motor vehicle whereby the video camera has a field of view including the space of the vehicle environment ahead.

3 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 2 , said vehicle event recorders further comprising an event trigger which when toggled results in transfer of a recorded video series to long-term memory whereby it is protected from overwrite.

4 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 3 , said vehicle event recorders further comprising a ‘panic button’ tactile switch arranged in relation with the event trigger whereby a vehicle operator tactile action toggles the trigger to cause a video series to be recorded in long-term memory where it is protected from overwrite.

5 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 3 , said vehicle event recorders further comprising at least one accelerometer arranged in relation with the event trigger whereby an abrupt acceleration action exceeding a preset threshold value toggles the event trigger to cause a video series to recorded in long-term memory whereby it is protected from overwrite.

6 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 2 , said vehicle event recorders further comprising an integrated infrared illumination system.

7 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 6 , said vehicle event recorders further comprising a second camera having a field of view associated with a driver compartment of a vehicle, said integrated infrared illumination system is directed to illuminate said driver compartment.

8 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 2 , said vehicle event recorders further comprising a web server module which provides an hypertext transfer protocol interface to these vehicle event recorders and microprocessor subsystems therein.

9 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 2 , said web server is arranged to serve html interactive web pages having controls which permit a user to make adjustments to vehicle event recorder subsystems.

10 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 2 , said vehicle event recorders further comprising at least one microphone arranged to convert audio energy to an electronic signal processable with said microprocessor.

11 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 2 , said vehicle event recorders further comprising an interface suitable for reading data from a standard on-board data bus.

12 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 11 , said standard on-board data bus including either from the group including: ISO9141; ISO9141-2; J1850; J1850-10.4; J1850-41.6; KWP2000; CAN; ISO 14230; ISO 15765; J1939 and J1708.

13 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 2 , said vehicle event recorders further comprising transducers not part of a on-board data bus.

14 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 13 , including either from the group: driveshaft rotation speed sensor; temperature sensor; precipitation sensor.

15 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 2 , said vehicle event recorders further comprising a global positioning system GPS position measurement means.

16 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 2 , said vehicle event recorders further comprising a display user interface device electronically coupled to the microprocessor for presentation of visual information.

17 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 2 , said vehicle event recorders further comprising a keypad electronically coupled to the microprocessor for tactile entry of data.

18 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 17 , microprocessor includes a module to process keypad entries for vehicle operator identification.

19 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 3 , said long term memory is arranged as a flash type, non-volatile memory buffer.

20 ) Vehicle event recorders of claim 3 , further including a memory arranged as an infinite managed loop memory coupled to receive image data directly from the camera.
