Abstract

Power distribution busses and methods are disclosed that provide flexible protection and alarming capabilities. Various embodiments provide interchangeability of fuses and circuit breakers within the same power distribution bus configuration. These various embodiments also provide discrete alarming for fused lines, discrete alarming for lines with circuit breakers, combined alarming for lines having mixed forms of protection, and/or selectable alarming such as combined versus discrete in relation to employing all fused lines, employing all circuit breaker protected lines, or employing mixed line protection.

Claims (32)

1. A method of providing circuit protection for a power distribution bus, comprising the steps of:

inserting a first fuse with an alarm connector in a first socket, the first socket having three alarm connections and two power connections, such that the alarm connector of the first fuse connects to the second alarm connector of the first socket;

inserting a second fuse with an alarm connector in a second socket, the second socket having three alarm connections and two power connections, such that the alarm connector of the second fuse connects to the second alarm connection of the second socket; and

inhibiting a response from an alarm circuit electrically linked to the first socket and the second socket until the first fuse or the second fuse is blown.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

removing the first fuse from the first socket;

inserting a circuit breaker having a pair of alarm connectors in the first socket, such that the pair of alarm connectors connect to the first and third alarm connections of the first socket.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising tripping the circuit breaker to deliver power to the alarm circuit through the alarm connector of the circuit breaker connected to the first alarm connection of the first socket.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising blocking a voltage source connected to the third alarm connection of the first socket.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising blowing the first fuse or the second fuse to deliver power to the alarm circuit through the alarm connector of the blown fuse.

6. A power distribution bus alarm circuit, comprising:

a first socket and a second socket, each having three alarm connections and two power connections;

alarm circuit connected to first and second alarm connections of the first and second sockets, the alarm circuit being responsive to a voltage being applied from the second of the three connections of the first or second socket and being responsive to a voltage being applied across first and third connections of the first or second sockets; and

a voltage source electrically connected to a third alarm connection of the first and second sockets.

7. The power distribution bus alarm circuit of claim 6 , wherein the first and second socket each are arranged to accept insertion of a fuse or a circuit breaker.

8. The power distribution bus alarm circuit of claim 6 , further comprising a fuse positioned in the first socket, the fuse electrically interconnecting the two power connections and isolating the first alarm connection from the power connection when in a non-blown state.

9. The power distribution bus alarm circuit of claim 6 , further comprising a circuit breaker positioned in the first socket, the circuit breaker electrically interconnecting the two power connections when in a non-tripped state and electrically interconnecting the second and third alarm connections when in a tripped state.

10. The power distribution bus alarm circuit of claim 6 , further comprising a fuse positioned in the second socket, the fuse electrically interconnecting the two power connections and isolating the first alarm connection from the power connection when in a non-blown state.

11. The power distribution bus alarm circuit of claim 6 , further comprising a first diode connected between the alarm circuit and the first alarm connections of the first socket, the diode oriented to prevent supply of an undesired voltage to the first socket resulting from a blown fuse in the second socket.

12. The power distribution bus alarm circuit of claim 6 , further comprising a diode connected between the alarm circuit and the first alarm connections of each socket, the diode oriented to prevent supply of an undesired voltage to a circuit element in the socket.

13. The power distribution bus alarm circuit of claim 6 , further comprising a light emitting diode electrically connected to the alarm circuit and activated by the alarm circuit.

14. The power distribution bus alarm circuit of claim 6 , further comprising a remote alarm signal generated from the alarm circuit.

15. The power distribution bus alarm circuit of claim 6 , further comprising one or more interfaces electrically connecting the first and second sockets to the alarm circuit.

16. A power distribution bus alarm circuit, comprising:

a first location and a second location, each having at least three alarm connections and two power connections; and

an alarm circuit connected to first and second alarm connections of the first and second locations, the alarm circuit being responsive to a voltage being applied from the second of the three connections of the first or second socket and being responsive to a voltage being applied across first and third connections of the first or second locations.

17. The power distribution bus alarm circuit of claim 16 , further comprising a voltage source electrically connected to a third alarm connection of the first and second locations.

18. The power distribution bus alarm circuit of claim 16 , wherein the first location and the second location comprise a first socket and a second socket, respectively.

19. The power distribution bus alarm circuit of claim 16 , wherein the first location is configured to accept a fuse having an alarm connector arranged to connect to the second alarm connection.

20. The power distribution bus alarm circuit of claim 16 , wherein the first location is configured to accept a circuit breaker having a first alarm connector arranged to connect to the first alarm connection and a second alarm connector arranged to connect to the third alarm connection.

21. The power distribution bus alarm circuit of claim 16 , further comprising:

a third location having at least three alarm connections and two power connections, wherein the alarm circuit is connected to first and second alarm connections of the third location and is responsive to a voltage being applied from the second connection of the third socket and is also responsive to a voltage being applied across first and third connections of the third location.
