Abstract

An active matrix liquid crystal display device includes substrates, a liquid crystal layer therebetween, video signal lines and scan signal lines formed on one of the substrates, and pixel electrodes connected to one of the video signal lines through an active device. Pixel areas, which are defined by the video signal lines and the scan signal lines which are formed in the shape of a matrix, have display electrodes, reference electrodes and the active device arranged therein. The display electrodes are arranged on one of the substrates, and the reference electrodes are arranged on another of the substrates, and each of the display electrodes and the reference electrodes has a slit. The slit of the display electrodes and the slit of the reference electrodes are shifted with respect to one another in plan view.

Claims (23)

1. An active matrix liquid crystal display device comprising:

a pair of substrates with a liquid crystal layer therebetween;

a plurality of video signal lines and a plurality of scan signal lines formed on one of the pair of substrates, and a plurality of pixel electrodes being connected to one of the video signal lines through an active device;

pixel areas which are defined by the video signal lines and the scan signal lines and which are formed in the shape of a matrix;

display electrodes, reference electrodes and the active device are arranged in the pixel areas; and

a light shielding film arranged over the video signal lines and the scan signal lines;

wherein the display electrodes are arranged on one of the pair of substrates, and the reference electrodes and the light shielding film are arranged on another of the pair of substrates;

wherein a part of the reference electrodes overlap with the light shielding film; and

wherein each of the display electrodes and the reference electrodes has a slit, the slit of the display electrodes and the slit of the reference electrodes being shifted with respect to one another in plan view.

2. An active matrix liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein the reference electrodes are counter electrodes.

3. An active matrix liquid crystal display device according to claim 2 , wherein the reference electrodes on each of the pixel areas have a common voltage inputted thereto.

4. An active matrix liquid crystal display device comprising:

a pair of substrates with a liquid crystal layer therebetween;

a plurality of video signal lines and a plurality of scan signal lines formed on one of the pair of substrates, and a plurality of pixel electrodes being connected to one of the video signal lines through an active device;

pixel areas which are defined by the video signal lines and the scan signal lines and which are formed in the shape of a matrix; and

display electrodes, reference electrodes and the active device are arranged in the pixel areas;

wherein the display electrodes are arranged on one of the pair of substrates, and the reference electrodes are arranged on another of the pair of substrates;

wherein each of the display electrodes and the reference electrodes has a slit, the slit of the display electrodes and the slit of the reference electrodes being shifted with respect to one another in plan view;

wherein the reference electrodes are counter electrodes; and

wherein the reference electrodes are light shielding films.

5. An active matrix liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein the reference electrodes are metal electrodes.

6. An active matrix liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein the reference electrodes overlap with the active device.

7. An active matrix liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein the reference electrodes enable light shielding.
