Abstract

A method of providing a customized information technology (IT) portal to a user is disclosed. The method comprises receiving an input that identifies the user, using the input to determine an attribute of the user based on pre-stored information about the user, and determining which of a plurality of IT downloads to make available to the user based on the user attribute. Based on the determination, customized browser-executable code for the user representing a user portal is generated. The code is provided to be executed on a browser of the user.

Claims (44)

1 . A computer program product for providing a customized information technology (IT) portal to a user, the product including a computer-readable medium and comprising computer program code encoded on the medium for:

receiving an input that identifies the user;

using the input to determine an attribute of the user based on pre-stored information about the user;

determining which of a plurality of IT downloads to make available to the user based on the user attribute;

generating browser-executable code for the user representing a user portal and customized based on the determination of which of the plurality of IT downloads to make available to the user; and

providing the code to be executed on a browser.

2 . The computer program product of claim 1 , further comprising code for generating scripts for performing IT tasks on a computer of the user and wherein the IT downloads comprise the scripts.

3 . The computer program product of claim 2 , wherein at least one script is configured to be performed by an agent on the computer.

4 . The computer program product of claim 3 , wherein the agent has elevated administrative privileges for executing the at least one script.

5 . The computer program product of claim 2 , wherein at least one script comprises a script to clean up files on the computer.

6 . The computer program product of claim 2 , wherein at least one script comprises a script to change settings on the computer.

7 . The computer program product of claim 2 , wherein at least one script comprises a script to perform a backup of files on the computer.

8 . The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the IT downloads comprise a software application and a script for installing the software application on the computer.

9 . The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein administrative privileges can be proxied from the user portal to install the software application on the computer in accordance with the script.

10 . The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the attribute of the user comprises the user's membership in a label group.

11 . The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the user portal comprises an interface for accessing IT articles.

12 . The computer program product of claim 1 , further comprising code for logging user activity on the user portal and storing the logged activity in a memory.

13 . The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein the user portal includes an interface for providing license key information to the user for use in installing the software application on the computer in accordance with the script.

14 . The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the user portal comprises a software library including a plurality of software patches.

15 . The computer program product of claim 1 , further comprising code for using the input to retrieve information about an IT help request of the user and its status and wherein the user portal comprises an interface for accessing the information.

16 . The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the user portal comprises an interface for accepting requests to produce an inventory of software on the computer.

17 . The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the attribute of the user comprises the user's membership in a label group.

18 . The computer program product of claim 13 , wherein the user portal comprises a software library including a plurality of software patches and an interface for accessing IT articles, and further comprising code for using the input to retrieve information about an IT help request of the user and its status and wherein the user portal comprises an interface for accessing the information.

19 . A computer program product for providing a customized information technology (IT) portal to an administrator of an enterprise network comprising a plurality of computers, the product including a computer-readable medium and comprising computer program code encoded on the medium for:

collecting data about a deployment of software to the plurality of computers;

collecting inventory data about each of the plurality of computers;

collecting data about a security indicator across the plurality of computers;

generating browser-executable code for displaying the collected deployment data, collected inventory data, and collected security indicator data; and

providing the code to be executed on a browser.

20 . The computer program product of claim 19 , further comprising code for collecting data about software patch deployment across the plurality of computers, and wherein the browser-executable code comprises browser-executable code for displaying the patch data.

21 . The computer program product of claim 19 , wherein the browser-executable code for displaying comprises browser-executable code for displaying the collected deployment data, collected inventory data, and collected security indicator data on a single webpage.

22 . The computer program product of claim 19 , wherein the security indicator comprises at least one of: detected malware items, active critical viruses, execution of antivirus measures, and machines remediated to a safe threat level.

23 . A method of providing a customized information technology (IT) portal to a user, the method comprising:

receiving an input that identifies the user;

using the input to determine an attribute of the user based on pre-stored information about the user;

determining which of a plurality of IT downloads to make available to the user based on the user attribute;

generating browser-executable code for the user representing a user portal customized based on the determination of which of the plurality of IT downloads to make available to the user; and

providing the code to be executed on a browser of the user.

24 . The method of claim 23 , further comprising generating scripts for performing IT tasks on a computer of the user and wherein the IT downloads comprise the scripts.

25 . The method of claim 24 , wherein at least one script is configured to be performed by an agent on the computer.

26 . The method of claim 25 , wherein the agent has elevated administrative privileges for executing the at least one script.

27 . The method of claim 23 , wherein the IT downloads comprise a software application and a script for installing the software application on the computer.

28 . The method of claim 27 , wherein administrative privileges can be proxied from the user portal to install the software application on the computer in accordance with the script.

29 . The method of claim 23 , further comprising using the input to retrieve information about an IT help request of the user and its status and wherein the user portal comprises an interface for accessing the information.
