Abstract

A structure for retaining a sensor and a body fascia panel entails a bracket, framework, or solid material that defines a receptacle or pocket for a sensor, such as a radar sensor, and a dip or slot such that a body fascia panel may he securely held in place. Additionally, a body fascia panel may exhibit an auxiliary structure that retains the sensor, and a fastener retainer, such as a circular fastener retainer. The structure may be molded directly into the body fascia panel as may the fastener retainer. The slot to retain the body fascia panel may run along the entire length, such as at an upper area, of a bracket, framework or solid material to hold the panel. To protect a sensor, such as a radar sensor, from road debris, water and other elements, a sealant may surround the sensor.

Claims (25)

1 . A structure for retaining a sensor comprising:

a bracket defining a first receptacle for the sensor and a second receptacle for a body fascia panel.

2 . The structure of claim 1 , wherein the second receptacle for the body fascia panel is a slot.

3 . The structure of claim 1 , wherein the bracket is integrally molded into the body fascia panel.

4 . The structure of claim 3 , further comprising a fastener retaining portion.

5 . The structure of claim 3 , further comprising a circular fastener retaining portion.

6 . The structure of claim 1 , wherein the slot is along a longitudinal length of the bracket.

7 . The structure of claim 1 , wherein the first receptacle is rectangular and the slot is located along a longitudinal length of the bracket.

8 . A structure for positioning a sensor and a body fascia panel of a vehicle, the structure comprising:

an elongated bracket defining a receptacle for the sensor and an elongated slot along a longitudinal length.

9 . The structure of claim 8 , wherein an edge of the body fascia panel resides within the slot.

10 . The structure of claim 9 , wherein the bracket is secured to the vehicle with at least one fastener.

11 . The structure of claim 10 , wherein the sensor is surrounded by a sealant.

12 . A structure for retaining a radar sensor comprising:

a bracket, wherein the bracket is attached to a body fascia panel, the bracket further defining a pocket to secure the radar sensor.

13 . The structure of claim 12 , wherein the pocket is rectangular.

14 . The structure of claim 12 , further comprising a fastener securing location to secure the bracket to a vehicle body.

15 . The structure of claim 12 , further comprising a circular fastener securing location to secure the bracket to a vehicle body.

16 . The structure of claim 15 , further comprising a sealant surrounding the structure to protect the sensor from water.

17 . The structure of claim 12 , wherein the bracket is a frame defining gaps between frame members, the bracket further defining a pocket within which the sensor resides.

18 . The structure of claim 17 , further comprising:

a fastener securing location to secure the structure to a vehicle body.

19 . The structure of claim 12 , wherein the bracket is solid and defines a pocket within which the sensor resides, the structure further comprising:

a fastener securing location to secure the structure to a vehicle underbody.

20 . The structure of claim 12 , wherein the bracket is integrally molded with the body fascia panel.
