Abstract

A golf ball comprising a core having an outer surface and a geometric center and being formed from a substantially homogenous formulation throughout; intermediate layer; and a cover layer; wherein the surface and center have a hardness, the hardness of the surface being substantially the same as or lower than the hardness of the center, and wherein a ratio of antioxidant to initiator used in said formulation is greater than about 0.40 when normalized to 100% activity.

Claims (28)

1. A golf ball comprising:

a core having an outer surface and a geometric center and being formed from a substantially homogenous formulation throughout;

an intermediate layer; and

a cover layer;

wherein the surface and the center have a hardness, the hardness of the surface being lower than the hardness of the center, and wherein a ratio of antioxidant to initiator used in said formulation is greater than about 0.40 when normalized to 100% activity.

2. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the ratio of antioxidant to initiator is greater than about 0.45.

3. The golf ball of claim 2 , wherein the ratio of antioxidant to initiator is greater than about 0.50.

4. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the initiator comprises a peroxide.

5. The golf ball of claim 4 , wherein the peroxide is added to the formulation in the amount from about 0.25 phr to about 5.0 phr at 100% activity.

6. The golf ball of claim 5 , wherein the peroxide is added to the formulation in the amount of about 0.5 phr to 1.5 phr.

7. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the antioxidant is added to the formulation in amount of about 0.2 phr to about 1 phr.

8. The golf ball of claim 7 , wherein the antioxidant is added to the formulation in amount of about 0.4 phr to about 0.7 phr.

9. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the antioxidant comprises 2,2′-ethylidene bis(4-methyl-6-t-butylphenol) or 2,2′-methylene-bis-(4-methyl-6-t-butylphenol) and the initiator comprises 1,1-di(t-butylperoxy)-3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexane and di(2-t-butylperoxyisopropyl) benzene.

10. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the formulation further comprises a soft and fast agent.

11. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the hardness of the center of the core is less than about 10 Shore C from the highest hardness value in the core.

12. The golf ball of claim 11 , wherein the hardness of the center of the core is less than about 5 Shore C from the highest hardness value in the core.

13. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the intermediate layer comprises an ionomer or a highly-neutralized ionomer and the cover layer comprises a castable polyurethane or polyurea material.

14. A golf ball comprising:

a core having a substantially homogenous formulation throughout and an outer surface and a center;

an inner cover layer comprising an ionomer or highly-neutralized ionomer; and

an outer cover layer comprising a polyurethane or polyurea material, about 330 to about 392 dimples having up to 7 different dimple sizes, and a staggered wave parting line;

wherein the hardness of the center of the core is higher than the hardness of the surface of the core, and wherein the hardness of the center of the core is less than about 10 Shore C lower than the highest hardness of the core.

15. The golf ball of claim 14 , wherein the center of the core is less than about 5 Shore C lower than the highest hardness of the core.

16. The golf ball of claim 14 , wherein a ratio of antioxidant to initiator used in said formulation is greater than about 0.40 when normalized to 100% activity.

17. A golf ball comprising:

a core having a substantially homogenous thermoset rubber composition throughout and a surface and center having a hardness, the hardness of the surface being lower than the hardness of the center to define a negative hardness gradient; and

a cover layer comprising an ionomer or a highly-neutralized ionomer;

wherein the negative hardness gradient is about 5 Shore C points or greater.
