WOUND DRESSING
The invention provides for the use of an effective amount of silver in the manufacture of a wound dressing comprising an anionic polymer, which dressing, when applied to the wound, gives a controlled release of ionic silver into the wound fluid for the prevention of staining of the underlying tissue.

A wound dressing comprising an anionic, amphoteric or hydrophilic polymer, and an effective amount of silver, which dressing, when placed in water gives a release of ionic silver into water of less than 1.5 ppm, and when in contact with wound exudate, gives a controlled release of ionic silver into the wound exudate.

The wound dressing of claim 1 , wherein the anionic, amphoteric or hydrophilic polymer is selected from the group consisting of polysaccharides, modified polysaccharides, polyvinylpyrrolidone, polyvinyl alcohols, polyvinyl ethers, polyurethanes, polyacrylates, polyacrylamides, collagen, gelatin and mixtures thereof.
3 . The wound dressing of claim 1 , wherein the wound dressing is in the form of fibers, or a powder, or distributed within a matrix of an adhesive.
4 . The wound dressing of claim 1 , wherein the wound dressing comprises from 0.1 to 20% by weight of silver.

A method for the prevention of skin staining of a wound treated with a silver containing wound dressing comprising applying to a wound a wound dressing which, when placed in water, gives a release of ionic silver into water of less than 1.5 ppm, and when in contact with wound exudate, gives a controlled release of ionic silver into the wound exudate.
6 . The method of claim 5 wherein the wound dressing comprises an anionic, amphoteric or hydrophilic polymer.

The method of claim 6 wherein the anionic, amphoteric or hydrophilic polymer is selected from the group consisting of polysaccharides, modified polysaccharides, polyvinylpyrrolidone, polyvinyl alcohols, polyvinyl ethers, polyurethanes, polyacrylates, polyacrylamides, collagen, gelatin and mixtures thereof.
8 . The method of claim 6 wherein the wound dressing is in the form of fibers, or a powder, or distributed within a matrix of an adhesive.
9 . The method of claim 5 wherein the wound dressing comprises from 0.1 to 20% by weight of silver.
