Abstract

Metal powder (such as tin, titanium, or tungsten powder) is heated in a flowing stream of an inert gas, such as argon, containing a small abundance of oxygen at a temperature to produce metal vapor. The metal reacts with the oxygen to form and deposit one-dimensional nanostructures of oxygen-containing metal on the metal powder (in the case of Ti and W) or on a suitable nearby substrate in the case of the lower melting tin. The metal oxides are not necessarily stoichiometric compounds. Water may be introduced into the flowing inert gas to increase or control the oxygen content. Sulfur vapor or a carbon source may be introduced to dope the nanostructures with sulfur or carbon. Reaction conditions may be modified to vary the shapes of the one-dimensional nanostructures.

Claims (24)

1. A method of making one-dimensional nanostructures of oxygen-containing titanium of desired oxygen content, the method comprising:

heating titanium metal in a reaction chamber to an oxidation temperature while flowing humidified inert gas and acetone over the titanium and while introducing oxygen into the flowing inert gas in an amount sufficient to react with the titanium and form the oxygen-containing titanium material; and

cooling the reaction chamber to harvest oxygen-containing titanium material as one-dimensional nanostructures on the titanium metal or on a separate substrate, the nanostructures comprising nanowall nanostructures.

2. A method of making one-dimensional nanostructures of oxygen-containing titanium as recited in claim 1 , the method further comprising:

placing a powder of titanium metal at a location in a tubular flow-through reactor having an inlet and an outlet;

heating the titanium metal to a temperature for forming a vapor of titanium;

flowing humidified inert gas and acetone through the tubular reactor over the vapor-generating titanium metal powder while introducing oxygen into the flowing inert gas in an amount sufficient to react with the titanium vapor and form the oxygen-containing titanium material, the oxygen containing titanium material being condensable as solid nanostructures at the temperature; and

providing a substrate surface for condensation of oxygen-containing titanium particles as one-dimensional nanostructures, the substrate surface being provided at the location of the titanium metal powder or downstream of the location with respect to the flow of the inert gas, the location of the substrate being predetermined for the formation of a desired structure of the one-dimensional nanostructures, the nanostructures comprising nanowall nanostructures.

3. A method of making one-dimensional nanostructures as recited in claim 1 in which the humidified inert gas is argon.

4. A method of making one-dimensional nanostructures as recited in claim 1 in which titanium metal powder is heated in a tubular flow-through reactor, the inert gas is flowed over and past the powder and the one-dimensional nanostructures are harvested on the metal powder.

5. A method of making one-dimensional nanostructures as recited in claim 1 in which the titanium metal is heated to a temperature in the range of about 700° C. to about 1000° C.

6. A method of making one-dimensional nanostructures as recited in claim 1 in which carbon fibers are used as a substrate for condensation of the one-dimensional nano structures.

7. A method of making one-dimensional nanostructures as recited in claim 1 in which the nanostructures have diameters in the range of about 10 nm to about 300 nm and lengths in the range of about one micrometer to about one millimeter.

8. A method of making one-dimensional nanostructures of oxygen-containing tin of desired oxygen content, the oxygen-containing tin nanostructures being deposited on carbon fibers, the method comprising:

heating tin metal in a reaction chamber to form tin vapor and to heat the vapor to an oxidation temperature while flowing an inert gas over the metal and while introducing oxygen into the flowing inert gas in an amount sufficient to react with the tin vapor and form the oxygen-containing tin material, the oxygen-containing tin material being condensable as a solid nanostructure at the temperature;

providing a carbon fiber substrate surface for condensation of oxygen-containing tin particles; and

cooling the reaction chamber to harvest oxygen-containing tin material as one-dimensional nanostructures on carbon fibers of at least five to ten micrometers in diameter.
