Abstract

The present invention relates to methods and systems for minimizing alien crosstalk between connectors. Specifically, the methods and systems relate to isolation and compensation techniques for minimizing alien crosstalk between connectors for use with high-speed data cabling. A frame can be configured to receive a number of connectors. Shield structures may be positioned to isolate at least a subset of the connectors from one another. The connectors can be positioned to move at least a subset of the connectors away from alignment with a common plane. A signal compensator may be configured to adjust a data signal to compensate for alien crosstalk. The connectors are configured to efficiently and accurately propagate high-speed data signals by, among other functions, minimizing alien crosstalk.

Claims (12)

1. An apparatus for reducing crosstalk comprising:

a cap constructed to fit about a jack that includes a port for receiving a plug, spring contacts for making electrical contact with the plug, and insulation displacement contacts housed in an insulation displacement contact housing, the insulation displacement contacts electrically connected to the spring contacts, the insulation displacement contact housing including a top, a back, and two sides, the cap constructed to form a shield structure along at least a portion of the top, the back, and the two sides of the insulation displacement contact housing, the cap including an electrically non-conductive material which is impregnated with an electrically conductive material such that the cap is overall electrically non-conductive, wherein the electrically conductive material of the cap is not constructed to be grounded when the jack is terminated to a cable, wherein the cap includes a notch along the back of the insulation displacement contact housing for allowing a cable to be terminated to the insulation displacement contacts of the jack.

2. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the electrically conductive material impregnated into the electrically non-conductive material includes carbon.

3. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the electrically conductive material impregnated into the electrically non-conductive material includes stainless steel.

4. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the electrically conductive material of the cap is coated with an electrically non-conductive insulator coating.

5. An apparatus for reducing crosstalk comprising:

a one-piece cap constructed to fit about a jack that includes a port for receiving a plug, spring contacts for making electrical contact with the plug, and insulation displacement contacts housed in an insulation displacement contact housing, the insulation displacement contacts electrically connected to the spring contacts, the insulation displacement contact housing including a top, a back, and two sides, the cap including a first wall portion constructed to at least partially cover the top, a second wall portion constructed to at least partially cover the back, and third and fourth wall portions constructed to at least partially cover the two sides of the insulation displacement contact housing, the cap including an extension projecting outwardly from the second wall portion of the cap away from the insulation displacement contacts, the extension including a curved wall defining a cable receiving portion, the cap constructed to fit about the jack with a snap-fit, the cap including an electrically non-conductive material which is impregnated with an electrically conductive material such that the cap is overall electrically non-conductive.

6. An apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the electrically conductive material impregnated into the electrically non-conductive material includes carbon.

7. An apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the electrically conductive material impregnated into the electrically non-conductive material includes stainless steel.

8. An apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the cap is configured to be mounted with a snap fit on a recommended (RJ) type jack.

9. An apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the electrically conductive material of the cap is coated with an electrically non-conductive insulator coating.

10. An apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the curved wall of the extension defines a contour similar to a contour of a cable to be terminated to the insulation displacement contacts of the jack.
