Abstract

A digital to analog conversion (DAC) module includes a digital to analog converter, a sample and hold circuit, and a switch module. The digital to analog converter is coupled to convert a digital signal into an analog signal. The sample and hold circuit is coupled to sample the analog signal to produce a sampled analog signal. The switch module is coupled to provide the analog signal as an output of the DAC module when the DAC module in a first mode and to output the analog signal to the sample and hold circuit when the DAC module in a second mode, wherein the sampled analog signal provides the output of the DAC module in the second mode.

Claims (42)

1. A digital to analog conversion (DAC) module comprises:

a digital to analog converter coupled to convert a digital signal into an analog signal;

a sample and hold circuit coupled to sample the analog signal to produce a sampled analog signal; and

a switch module coupled to provide the analog signal as an output of the DAC module when the DAC module is in a first mode and to output the analog signal to the sample and hold circuit when the DAC module is in a second mode, wherein the sampled analog signal provides the output of the DAC module in the second mode.

2. The DAC module of claim 1 , wherein the digital to analog converter comprises:

a sigma-delta modulator coupled to convert to the digital signal into a sigma-delta modulated signal;

a current amplifier section coupled to convert the sigma-delta modulated signal into an analog current; and

a voltage to current module coupled to convert the analog current into the analog signal.

3. The DAC module of claim 2 , wherein the voltage to current module comprises:

a variable current source coupled to produce a reference current based on the analog current; and

an impedance coupled to produce the analog signal based on the reference current.

4. The DAC module of claim 3 , wherein the impedance comprises:

a variable impedance coupled to produce the analog signal in accordance with a current-to-voltage gain setting.

5. The DAC module of claim 3 , wherein the voltage to current module comprises:

the variable current source coupled to produce a reference current based on the analog current and a current-to-voltage gain setting.

6. The DAC module of claim 1 further comprises:

a multiplexer coupled to provide a first digital signal as the digital signal when the DAC module is in the first mode and coupled to provide a second digital signal as the digital signal when the DAC module is in the second mode.

7. The DAC module of claim 1 further comprises:

the first mode including an amplitude modulation mode; and

the second mode including a power level mode.

8. The DAC module of claim 7 further comprises:

the analog signal including amplitude modulation information when the DAC module in the first mode; and

the analog signal including power level information when the DAC module is in the second mode.

9. A digital to analog conversion (DAC) module comprises:

a digital to analog converter coupled to:

convert a digital amplitude modulation information signal into an analog amplitude modulation information signal when the DAC module is in a first mode; and

convert a digital power level information signal into an analog power level information signal when the DAC module is in a second mode;

a switch module coupled to provide the analog amplitude modulation information signal as an output of the DAC module when the DAC module in the first mode and to provide the analog power level information signal to a sample and hold circuit when the DAC module in the second mode; and

the sample and hold circuit coupled to sample the analog power level information signal to produce a sampled analog power level information signal as the output of the DAC module.

10. The DAC module of claim 9 , wherein the digital to analog converter comprises:

a sigma-delta modulator coupled to convert to the digital amplitude modulation or power level information signal into a sigma-delta modulated signal;

a current amplifier section coupled to convert the sigma-delta modulated signal into an analog current; and

a voltage to current module coupled to convert the analog current into the analog amplitude modulation or power level information signal.

11. The DAC module of claim 10 , wherein the voltage to current module comprises:

a variable current source coupled to produce a reference current based on the analog current; and

an impedance coupled to produce the analog amplitude modulation or power level information signal based on the reference current.

12. The DAC module of claim 11 , wherein the impedance comprises:

a variable impedance coupled to produce the analog amplitude modulation or power level information signal in accordance with a current-to-voltage gain setting.

13. The DAC module of claim 11 , wherein the voltage to current module comprises:

the variable current source coupled to produce a reference current based on the analog current and a current-to-voltage gain setting.

14. The DAC module of claim 9 further comprises:

a multiplexer coupled to provide the digital amplitude modulation information signal to the digital to analog converter when the DAC module is in the first mode and coupled to provide the digital power level information signal to the digital to analog converter when the DAC module is in the second mode.
