Abstract

A method for controlling operation of a multi-pair gigabit transceiver. The multi-pair gigabit transceiver comprises a Physical Layer Control module (PHY Control), a Physical Coding Sublayer module (PCS) and a Digital Signal Processing module (DSP). The PHY Control receives user-defined inputs from the Serial Management module and status signals from the DSP and the PCS and generates control signals, responsive to the user-defined inputs and the status signals, to the DSP and the PCS.

Claims (13)

1. A communication device transceiver comprising:

transceiver functionality; and

a physical layer control module (PHY control module) operable to receive status signals from the transceiver functionality and operable to receive management signals, and operable to provide control signals, responsive to the status signals and the management signals, to the transceiver functionality.

2. The transceiver of claim 1 wherein the transceiver functionality comprises a physical coding sublayer (PCS) module and wherein the PHY control module is operable to receive the status signals from the PCS module and operable to provide the control signals, responsive to the status signals and the management signals, to the PCS module.

3. The transceiver of claim 1 wherein the transceiver functionality comprises a digital signal processor (DSP) and wherein the PHY control module is operable to receive the status signals from the DSP and operable to provide the control signals, responsive to the status signals and the management signals, to the DSP.

4. The transceiver of claim 1 further comprising a management interface operable to receive the management signals from one of a user and software, and wherein the PHY control module is configured to receive the management signals from the management interface.

5. The transceiver of claim 1 , further comprising an auto-negotiation module operable to provide a link control signal to the PHY control module, the PHY control module being operable to provide a start signal to the transceiver functionality in response to the link control signal, the start signal causing the transceiver functionality to start operation.

6. The transceiver of claim 1 , further comprising a Gigabit Medium Independent Interface (GMII) module operable to provide a transmit enable signal to the transceiver functionality, the PHY control module being operable to provide a transmit start signal to the transceiver functionality in response to the transmit enable signal, the transmit start signal causing the transceiver functionality to commence transmitting.

7. The transceiver of claim 1 , wherein the PHY control module is configured to receive a user-defined reset signal and, in response thereto, provide a control signal to the transceiver functionality to reset the transceiver functionality.

8. The transceiver of claim 1 wherein the control signals include a reset signal and wherein the transceiver functionality is operable to reset in response to the reset signal.

9. The transceiver of claim 1 wherein the transceiver functionality comprises a set of echo cancellers and a set of near-end cross-talk (NEXT) cancellers, and wherein the control signals include echo and NEXT control signals that control convergence of the echo cancellers and NEXT cancellers.

10. The transceiver of claim 1 wherein the transceiver functionality comprises a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) and wherein the control signals include DFE control signals that control convergence of the DFE.

11. The transceiver of claim 1 wherein the transceiver functionality comprises a timing recovery module and wherein the control signals include timing recovery control signals that control convergence of the timing recovery module.
