Abstract

A message exchange network is disclosed in which at least two different methods of storing messages in memories of message storage entities, e.g., a mobile handset, an SMSC, an e-mail client, or an e-mail server, are utilized based on the type and the content of the information contained within the message. An information service message containing information that is supercedingly updateable, e.g., stock quote, weather or traffic information, is stored using a replacement method by which an older message previously stored is replaced by a newly received message. All other types of messages are stored using an append method by which the newly received message is stored in an unoccupied available memory location. In a disclosed embodiment, message identifier included in the message itself provides information necessary to distinguish between the aforementioned two types of messages. In a disclosed embodiment, a block of message identifiers is reserved for storage of information service messages. The architectures and methods for receipt, delivery and storage of messages disclosed herein replaceable and/or on demand update of information service messages while providing efficient use of memory in which the messages are stored, avoiding the annoyance and inconvenience to the subscriber in having to scroll through numerous stale and/or obsolete messages in order to view the most current up to date message and having to manually selecting and deleting obsolete and stale messages, and avoiding unnecessary deliveries of the obsolete and stale messages by message centers.

Claims (42)

1. A method of superceding a broadcast data message in a wireless device, comprising:

receiving in a wireless device a superceding data message comprising a message identifier to signify that said superceding data message is to entirely supercedingly replace an existing previously received data message;

confirming that said message identifier signifies that said received superceding data message is to entirely supercedingly replace said existing previously received data message; and

supercedingly replacing in said wireless device said entire existing previously received data message with said superceding data message.

2. The method of superceding a broadcast data message in a wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein:

said data message is a short message service (SMS) message.

3. The method of superceding a broadcast data message in a wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein:

said message identifier is assigned by a Short Message Service Center (SMSC).

4. The method of superceding a broadcast data message in a wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein:

said message identifier is assigned by an information service provider.

5. The method of superceding a broadcast data message in a wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein:

said message identifier is assigned by a subscriber.

6. The method of superceding a broadcast data message in a wireless device according to claim 1 , further comprising:

indicating in said wireless device that said superceding replacement has occurred.

7. The method of superceding a broadcast data message in a wireless device according to claim 6 , wherein said indicating comprises:

outputting an audible alert sound from said wireless device.

8. Apparatus for superceding a broadcast data message in a wireless device, comprising:

means for receiving in a wireless device a superceding data message comprising a message identifier to signify that said superceding data message is to entirely supercedingly replace an existing previously received data message;

means for confirming that said message identifier signifies that said received superceding data message is to entirely supercedingly replace said existing previously received data message; and

means for supercedingly replacing in said wireless device said entire existing previously received data message with said superceding data message.

9. The method of superceding a broadcast data message in a wireless device according to claim 8 , wherein:

said data message is a short message service (SMS) message.

10. The method of superceding a broadcast data message in a wireless device according to claim 8 , wherein:

said message identifier is assigned by a Short Message Service Center (SMSC).

11. The apparatus for revising a stored file in a wireless device according to claim 10 , wherein:

said means for alerting said user includes an audible alerting sound.

12. The apparatus for revising a stored file in a wireless device according to claim 11 , wherein:

said means for alerting said user includes a message placed on a display of said wireless device.

13. The method of superceding a broadcast data message in a wireless device according to claim 8 , wherein:

said message identifier is assigned by an information service provider.

14. The method of superceding a broadcast data message in a wireless device according to claim 8 , wherein:

said message identifier is assigned by a subscriber.

15. The method of superceding a broadcast data message in a wireless device according to claim 8 , further comprising:

indicating in said wireless device that said superceding replacement has occurred.

16. The method of superceding a broadcast data message in a wireless device according to claim 15 , wherein said indicating comprises:

outputting an audible alert sound from said wireless device.

17. The apparatus for revising a stored file in a wireless device according to claim 15 , further comprising:

an on-demand request message utilizes a mobile originated short message.

18. The apparatus for revising a stored file in a wireless device according to claim 15 , wherein:

said wireless device is a mobile handset.

19. The apparatus for revising a stored file in a wireless device according to claim 15 , further comprising:

means for alerting a user of said wireless device of receipt of a superceding update.
