Abstract

Methods and systems for providing data backup are disclosed. One method includes receiving at a virtual tape backup system a data image to be maintained, and transmitting the contents of the data image to a secure storage appliance. The method also includes processing the contents of the data image with the secure storage appliance to cryptographically split one or more blocks of data of the data image such that each of the one or more blocks of data is split into a plurality of secondary data blocks. The method further includes storing the plurality of secondary data blocks in a corresponding plurality of shares located on a plurality of physical storage devices.

Claims (45)

1 . A method of providing data backup, the method comprising:

receiving at a virtual tape backup system a data image to be maintained;

transmitting the contents of the data image to a secure storage appliance;

processing the contents of the data image with the secure storage appliance to cryptographically split one or more blocks of data of the data image such that each of the one or more blocks of data is split into a plurality of secondary data blocks;

storing the plurality of secondary data blocks in a corresponding plurality of shares located on a plurality of physical storage devices.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising cataloging the contents of the data image at the virtual tape backup system.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the contents of the data image to the secure storage appliance comprises transmitting the one or more blocks of data to the secure storage appliance.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the contents of the data image to the secure storage appliance comprises transmitting the data image to the secure storage appliance.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving at the secure storage appliance a tape backup command; and

translating the tape backup command;

wherein storing the plurality of secondary data blocks includes executing the translated tape backup command.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the physical storage devices include magnetic tape recording devices.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the physical storage devices include hard disk drives.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the virtual tape server comprises software executing on the secure storage appliance.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the virtual tape server transmits the contents of the data image to the secure storage appliance by addressing a virtual disk presented to the virtual tape server by the secure storage appliance.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the data image corresponds to a disk image of software resident on a computing system.

11 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a request at the virtual tape server for the data image;

determining a location of the data image based on catalog information managed by the virtual tape server;

sending a request for the contents of the data image to the secure storage appliance;

processing the request for contents of the data image by reconstituting the at least one block of data from a plurality of secondary data blocks from among the plurality of data blocks generated by the secure storage appliance;

returning the at least one block of data to the virtual tape server from the secure storage appliance.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of secondary data blocks corresponds to fewer than all of the blocks of data cryptographically split by the secure storage appliance.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein returning the at least one block of data includes transmitting the at least one block of data from the virtual tape server to a client system.

14 . A data backup arrangement comprising:

a virtual tape backup system configured to receive a data image;

a plurality of physical storage devices; and

a secure storage appliance communicatively connected to the virtual tape backup system and the plurality of physical storage devices, the secure storage appliance configured to:

receive the contents of the data image from the virtual tape backup system;

process the contents of the data image at the secure storage appliance to cryptographically split one or more blocks of data of the data image such that each of the one or more blocks of data is split into a plurality of secondary data blocks; and

store the plurality of secondary data blocks in a corresponding plurality of shares located on the plurality of physical storage devices.

15 . The data backup arrangement of claim 14 , wherein the virtual tape backup system is configured to receive the data image from an application server.

16 . The data backup arrangement of claim 14 , wherein the virtual tape backup system connects to the secure storage appliance via a storage area network.

17 . The data backup arrangement of claim 14 , wherein the physical storage devices include magnetic tape recording devices.

18 . The data backup arrangement of claim 14 , wherein one or more of the physical storage devices is at a location remote from the secure storage appliance.

19 . A secure storage appliance configured to operate within a data backup arrangement, the secure storage appliance including a programmable circuit configured to execute program instructions which, when executed, configure the secure storage appliance to:

receive contents of a data image from a virtual tape backup system;

process the contents of the data image at the secure storage appliance to cryptographically split one or more blocks of data of the data image such that each of the one or more blocks of data is split into a plurality of secondary data blocks; and

store the plurality of secondary data blocks in a corresponding plurality of shares located on a plurality of physical storage devices.

20 . The secure storage appliance of claim 19 , wherein the contents of the data image includes the entire data image.

21 . The secure storage appliance of claim 19 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed with instructions which, when executed, configure the programmable circuit to:

receive at the secure storage appliance a tape backup command; and

translate the tape backup command; and

wherein storing the plurality of secondary data blocks includes executing the translated tape backup command.
