Abstract

Golf ball compositions, and components formed therefrom, including trifunctional materials, such as trifunctional isocyanates, polyols, and amines, that have improved performance and durability characteristics, e.g., improved heat resistance, improved resiliency, and dimensional stability.

Claims (24)

1. A golf ball comprising a core and a cover, wherein at least one layer comprises a composition comprising:

a prepolymer comprising a reaction product of an isocyanate and an amine-terminated component with a molecular weight of at least 500, wherein the isocyanate comprises three functional groups; and

a curative blend comprising a primary diamine and a tri-functional amine terminated curing agent, wherein the tri-functional amine terminated curing agent is selected from the group consisting of ethylene oxide based triamines, N-(2-aminoethyl)-1,3-propylenediamine and mixtures thereof;

and

wherein the composition has an average molecular weight between crosslinks of about 3000 or greater.

2. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the second curing agent primary diamine is selected from the group consisting of 4,4′-diaminodicyclohexylmethane, 3,3′-dimethyl-4,4-diaminodicyclohexylmethane, polyoxyethylene diamines, polyoxypropylene diamines, (ethylene oxide-capped)-polyoxypropylene diamines, polytetramethylene ether diamines, and mixtures thereof.

3. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein tri-functional amine-terminated curing agent is an ethylene oxide based triamine.

4. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the isocyanate is selected from the group consisting of an isocyanurate trimer of hexamethylene diisocyanate, an isocyanurate trimer of toluene diisocyanate, an isocyanurate trimer of isophorone diisocyanate, a blend of isophorone diisocyanate and an isocyanurate trimer of isophorone diisocyanate, and mixtures thereof.

5. A golf ball comprising a core, an inner cover layer, and an outer cover layer, wherein the outer cover layer is formed of a composition comprising:

a prepolymer, wherein the prepolymer comprises an isocyanate and an amine-terminated component; and

a curative comprising a first primary diamine and a tri-functional amine-terminated component, wherein the tri-functional amine-terminated component is selected from the group consisting of ethylene oxide based triamines, N-(2-aminoethyl)-1,3-propylenediamine and mixtures thereof.

6. The golf ball of claim 5 , wherein the inner cover layer comprises a thermoplastic material.

7. The golf ball of claim 6 , wherein the thermoplastic material comprises an ionomer resin.

8. The golf ball of claim 5 , wherein the primary diamine is selected from the group consisting of 4,4′-diaminodicyclohexylmethane, 3,3′-dimethyl-4,4′-diaminodicyclohexylmethane, polyoxyethylene diamines, polyoxypropylene diamines, (ethylene oxide-capped)-polyoxypropylene diamines, polytetramethylene ether diamines, and mixtures thereof.

9. The golf ball of claim 5 , wherein the trifunctional amine-terminated component is an ethylene oxide based triamine.

10. A golf ball comprising a core and a cover, wherein at least one layer comprises a composition comprising:

a prepolymer comprising a reaction product of an isocyanate and an amine-terminated component, wherein at least one of the isocyanate comprises or amine-terminated component comprises three functional groups; and

a curative comprising a first component comprising a primary diamine and a second component comprising a tri-functional amine-terminated component selected from the group consisting of ethylene oxide based triamines, N-(2-aminoethyl)-1,3-propylenediamine, and mixtures thereof.

11. The golf ball of claim 10 , wherein the isocyanate is selected from the group consisting of an isocyanurate trimer of hexamethylene diisocyanate, an isocyanurate trimer of toluene diisocyanate, an isocyanurate trimer of isophorone diisocyanate, a blend of isophorone diisocyanate and an isocyanurate trimer of isophorone diisocyanate, and mixtures thereof.

12. The golf ball of claim 10 , wherein the at least one layer is a cover layer.

13. The golf ball of claim 10 , wherein the cover comprises an inner cover layer and an outer cover layer, and wherein the outer cover layer comprises the composition.

14. The golf ball of claim 13 , wherein the inner cover layer comprises an ionomer resin.

15. The golf ball of claim 10 , wherein primary diamine is selected from the group consisting of 4,4′-diaminodicyclohexylmethane, 3,3′-dimethyl-4, 4′-diaminodicyclohexylmethane, polyoxyethylene diamines, polyoxypropylene diamines, (ethylene oxide-capped)-polyoxypropylene diamines, polytetramethylene ether diamines, and mixtures thereof.

16. The golf ball of claim 10 , wherein the trifunctional amine-terminated component is an ethylene oxide based triamine.
