Abstract

Methods and systems for compensating for alien crosstalk generated by one or more of a plurality of wire pairs in a telecommunications jack are disclosed. One method includes positioning a crosstalk compensation arrangement relating to crosstalk across at least a first wire pair and a second wire pair on a circuit board within a telecommunications jack. The method also includes altering the crosstalk compensation arrangement to accommodate at least one zone of crosstalk compensation having an asymmetric capacitive coupling between a first wire pair and a second wire pair to reduce alien crosstalk generated from one of the first and second wire pairs. Specific jacks and compensation arrangements are disclosed as well.

Claims (36)

1. A method for compensating for alien crosstalk generated by one or more of a plurality of wire pairs in a telecommunications jack, the method comprising:

positioning a crosstalk compensation arrangement relating to crosstalk across at least a first wire pair and a second wire pair on a circuit board within a telecommunications jack, the crosstalk compensation arrangement including a plurality of symmetric zones of crosstalk compensation between a first wire pair and a second wire pair; and

altering the crosstalk compensation arrangement in at least one of the plurality of zones of crosstalk compensation nearest to contact springs of the first wire pair and the second wire pair to provide an asymmetric capacitive coupling between the first wire pair and the second wire pair to reduce alien crosstalk generated from one of the first and second wire pairs.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein altering the crosstalk compensation arrangement comprises selecting a compensation arrangement which substantially improves the overall balance of a system including the telecommunications jack and a plug electrically connected to the telecommunications jack.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the compensation arrangement of at least one of the plurality of zones of crosstalk compensation is completely asymmetric with respect to at least one of the first and second wire pairs.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the compensation arrangement includes asymmetric compensation located across at least one track of two or more wire pairs electrically connected through the telecommunications jack.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of zones of crosstalk compensation includes two capacitive elements connected between wires of a first wire pair and a second wire pair.

6. A telecommunications jack for use in a twisted pair system, the jack comprising:

a housing defining a port for receiving a plug;

a plurality of contact springs adapted to make electrical contact with the plug when the plug is inserted into the port of the housing;

a plurality of wire termination contacts for terminating wires to the jack;

a circuit board including conductive tracks that electrically connect the contact springs to the wire termination contacts; and

a crosstalk compensation arrangement that provides crosstalk compensation between selected tracks of the circuit board, the crosstalk compensation arrangement including a plurality of zones of crosstalk compensation including a first zone having an asymmetric capacitive coupling between a first wire pair and a second wire pair and a second zone having an asymmetric capacitive coupling between a third wire pair and one of the first and second wire pairs, the first and second zones of crosstalk compensation positioned nearest to the contact springs associated with the first wire pair and the second wire pair and arranged to reduce alien crosstalk generated from at least one of the first, second, and third wire pairs.

7. The telecommunications jack of claim 6 , wherein the zone of crosstalk compensation includes two capacitive elements connected between wires of the first wire pair and the second wire pair.

8. The telecommunications jack of claim 7 , wherein the two capacitive elements connect between different wires of the first wire pair and the second wire pair.

9. The telecommunications jack of claim 6 , wherein the at least one zone of crosstalk compensation is completely asymmetric with respect to at least one of the first and second wire pairs.

10. The telecommunications jack of claim 6 , wherein the crosstalk compensation arrangement includes two or more zones of crosstalk compensation.

11. The telecommunications jack of claim 6 , wherein the compensation arrangement substantially improves the overall balance of a system including the telecommunications jack and a plug electrically connected to the telecommunications jack.

12. A crosstalk compensation system within a telecommunications jack, the system comprising:

a circuit board;

a plurality of contact springs mounted on the circuit board, the contact springs including first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth consecutively arranged contact springs;

a plurality of wire termination contacts mounted on the circuit board, the wire termination contents including first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth wire termination contacts for terminating wires to the jack;

a plurality of tracks on the circuit board, the tracks including first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth tracks that respectively electrically connect the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth contact springs to the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth wire termination contacts;

a crosstalk compensation arrangement that provides crosstalk compensation between selected tracks of the circuit board, the crosstalk compensation arrangement including a plurality of zones of crosstalk compensation including a first zone having an asymmetric capacitive coupling between a first wire pair and a second wire pair and a second zone having an asymmetric capacitive coupling between a third wire pair and one of the first and second wire pairs, the first and second zones of crosstalk compensation positioned nearest to the contact springs associated with the first, second, and third wire pairs and arranged to reduce alien crosstalk generated from at least one of the first, second, and third wire pairs.

The system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one zone of compensation includes a first capacitive element between the first track and the third track and a second capacitive element between the second track and the sixth track, the second capacitive element having a magnitude less than the first capacitive element.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one zone of compensation includes a capacitive element between the second track and the fifth track in the absence of a capacitive element between the first track and the fourth track.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one zone of compensation includes a capacitive element between the third track and the seventh track in the absence of a capacitive element between the sixth track and the eighth track.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one zone of compensation includes a capacitive element between the fifth track and the eighth track in the absence of a capacitive element between the fourth track and the seventh track.

The system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one zone of compensation includes a first capacitive element between the third track and the fifth track and a second capacitive element between the fourth track and the sixth track, the second capacitive element having a magnitude less than the first capacitive element.

18. A method of designing a crosstalk compensation system for a telecommunications jack, the method comprising:

positioning a plurality of zones of crosstalk compensation across at least a first wire pair and a second wire pair on a circuit board within a telecommunications jack, the plurality of zones including a zone of crosstalk compensation nearest contact springs of the first wire pair and the second wire pair incorporating one or more symmetric capacitive elements and having a magnitude and position providing compensation for local crosstalk; and

altering the magnitudes of one or more of the capacitive elements in the zone of crosstalk compensation such that the zone of compensation has an asymmetric capacitive coupling between a first wire pair and a second wire pair to reduce alien crosstalk generated from one of the first and second wire pairs, wherein the overall position of the zone of compensation is substantially maintained.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the zone of crosstalk compensation is a zone of crosstalk compensation positioned nearest to contact springs associated with the first and second wire pairs in a telecommunications jack.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the overall magnitude of the zone of compensation is substantially maintained.

21. The method of claim 18 , wherein altering the magnitudes of one or more of the capacitive elements comprises selecting a compensation arrangement which substantially improves the overall balance of a system including the telecommunications jack and a plug electrically connected to the telecommunications jack.

22. The method of claim 18 , wherein the compensation arrangement is completely asymmetric with respect to at least one of the first and second wire pairs.
