Abstract

The present invention is directed to multi-layer golf balls having a center, a cover layer, and at least one intermediate layer between the core and the cover layer. The core, the at least one intermediate layer and the cover are constructed to have different initial velocities and COR such that the gradient of the initial velocities and COR progress from a faster center to a slower cover.

Claims (16)

1. A multi-layer golf ball comprising an inner core, an outer core, at least one intermediate layer and a cover layer,

wherein each subassembly of the golf ball has a combined coefficient of restitution value of COR C and an initial velocity V C for the inner core, COR C1 and V C1 for a first subassembly with an inner core layer and an outer core layer adjacent to the inner core, COR C2 and V 2 for a second subassembly with an intermediate layer adjacent to the outer core layer, and COR C3 and V 3 for the ball including the cover layer,

such that COR C ≧COR C1 +0.004; COR C1 ≧COR C2 +0.004; COR C2 ≧COR C3 +0.004, COR C being at least 0.815, and V C ≧V C1 ≧V C2 ≧V C3 ,

wherein the inner core is formed of a first material having a first Shore D hardness and a first elastic modulus, the outer core is formed of a second material having a second Shore D hardness and a second elastic modulus such that the first Shore D hardness and the second Shore D hardness differ by at least 10 points and the first elastic modulus and the second elastic modulus differ by at least 10%.

2. The multi-layer golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the inner core, outer core and the intermediate layer comprise ethylene in an amount of from about 60% to about 90% by weight, α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid in an amount of from about 8% to about 20% by weight, and n-alkyl acrylate in an amount of from about 0% to about 25% by weight.

3. The multi-layer golf ball of claim 2 , further comprising a fatty acid salt.

4. The multi-layer golf ball of claim 2 , wherein the carboxylic acid in the intermediate layer is 100% neutralized with metal ions.

5. The multi-layer golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the hardness of the cover layer is less than about 45 Shore D.

6. The multi-layer golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the hardness of the intermediate layer is from about 40 Shore D to 70 Shore D.

7. The multi-layer golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the hardness of the first material is from about 30 Shore D to about 80 Shore D.

8. The multi-layer golf ball of claim 4 , wherein the hardness of the first material is lower than the hardness of the second material.

9. The multi-layer golf ball of claim 4 , wherein the hardness of the first material is greater than the hardness of the second material.

10. The multi-layer golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the first material has an elastic modulus of from about 5000 psi to about 100,000 psi.

11. The multi-layer golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the compression of the golf ball is at least about 40.

12. The multi-layer golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the coefficient of restitution of the golf ball is greater than about 0.70.

13. The multi-layer golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the core effective compression constant EC C is less than about 90% of the combined core effective compression constants of the first and second materials.
