Abstract

A reduced-pressure treatment system for treating a wound on a patient includes a composite manifold that may help prevent or minimize injury to a wound edge of the wound being treated with reduced pressure. The composite manifold includes a perimeter manifold member and an inboard manifold member. The perimeter manifold member is designed to not collapse substantially under reduced pressure in a therapy range. The perimeter manifold member may be more rigid with respect to compressibility than the inboard manifold member. A sealing member is used to form a fluid seal over the wound, and a reduced-pressure subsystem provides reduced pressure to the composite manifold. Other systems, methods, and dressings are presented.

Claims (43)

1. A reduced-pressure treatment system for treating a wound, the reduced-pressure treatment system comprising:

a sealing member adapted to form a fluid seal over the wound;

a composite manifold, comprising:

a perimeter manifold member adapted to support an edge of the wound and carry a load asserted by the sealing member, the perimeter manifold member having an interior portion and a first bulk modulus K1, and

an inboard manifold member disposed adjacent to the interior portion of the perimeter manifold member, the inboard manifold member having a second bulk modulus K2, wherein K1 is greater than K2;

and

a reduced-pressure subsystem for providing reduced pressure to the composite manifold.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the perimeter manifold member is more rigid than the inboard manifold member.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the perimeter manifold member comprises a plurality of manifold members.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the perimeter manifold member is coupled to the inboard manifold member.

5. The system composite manifold of claim 1 , wherein

the perimeter manifold member has a first density, ρ1;

the inboard manifold member has a second density, ρ2; and

the first density is greater than the second density, ρ1>ρ2.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the perimeter manifold member comprises a first manifold material and a bioactive material.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the perimeter manifold member comprises a first manifold material and a bioactive material and wherein the bioactive material comprises epinephrine.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the perimeter manifold member comprises a bio-friendly stiffening substance.

9. A composite manifold for use in a reduced-pressure treatment system, the composite manifold comprising:

a perimeter manifold member adapted to support a wound edge and carry a load asserted by a sealing member, the perimeter manifold member having an interior portion and a first bulk modulus K1, and

an inboard manifold member disposed adjacent to the interior portion of the perimeter manifold member, the inboard manifold member having a second bulk modulus K2, wherein K1 is greater than K2.

10. The composite manifold of claim 9 wherein the perimeter manifold member is more rigid with respect to compressibility than the inboard manifold member.

11. The composite manifold of claim 9 wherein the perimeter manifold member is coupled to the inboard manifold member.

12. The composite manifold of claim 9 , wherein

the perimeter manifold member has a first density, ρ1;

the inboard manifold member has a second density, ρ2; and

the first density is greater than the second density, ρb 1 >ρ 2 .

13. The composite manifold of claim 9 wherein the perimeter manifold member comprises a first manifold material and a bioactive material.

14. The composite manifold of claim 9 wherein the perimeter manifold member comprises a first manifold material and a bioactive material and wherein the bioactive material comprises epinephrine.

15. A method of treating a wound site with reduced pressure, the method comprising the steps of:

disposing a composite manifold adjacent to the wound site;

forming a fluid seal over the composite manifold;

fluidly coupling a reduced-pressure source to the composite manifold; and

wherein the composite manifold comprises:

a perimeter manifold member adapted to support an edge of the wound, the perimeter manifold member having an interior portion and a first bulk modulus K1, and

an inboard manifold member disposed adjacent to the interior portion of the perimeter manifold member, the inboard manifold member having a second bulk modulus K2, wherein K1 is greater than K2.

16. The method of treating a wound site of claim 15 , wherein the perimeter manifold member is coupled to the inboard manifold member.

17. The method of treating a wound site of claim 15 , wherein

the perimeter manifold member has a first density, ρ1;

the inboard manifold member has a second density, ρ2; and

the first density is greater than the second density, ρ1>ρ2.

18. The method of treating a wound site of claim 15 , wherein the perimeter manifold member comprises a first manifold material and a bioactive material.

19. The method of treating a wound site of claim 15 , wherein the perimeter manifold member comprises a first manifold material and a bioactive material and the bioactive material comprises epinephrine.

20. The method of treating a wound site of claim 15 , wherein the inboard manifold comprises a bioactive material.
