Abstract

The invention is directed to code labeling in an optical network. The network includes a transmitting station operable to transmit an optical signal. The network also includes an encoder coupled to the transmitting station operable to label the optical signal composed of a group of codes. A receiving station operable to receive the labeled group of optical codes is also provided. The receiving station is operable to read the optical signal if the label of the received group of codes corresponds to the group of codes assigned to the receiving station.

Claims (33)

1. An optical network comprising:

a transmitting station configured to transmit an optical signal having a group of coded optical signals;

a spectral phase encoder coupled to the transmitting station and configured to label the optical signal having the group of coded optical signals, wherein the spectral phase encoder comprises a plurality of cascaded switches and coders; and

a receiving station operable to receive the labeled optical signal, wherein the receiving station is configured to read the labeled optical signal if the code used to label the group of coded optical signals corresponds to the label associated with the receiving station.

2. The optical network of claim 1 , further comprising a variable coder coupled in between the encoder and the receiving station, wherein the variable coder is configured to re-label the incoming optical signal with a new group of codes corresponding to the receiving station.

3. The optical network of claim 1 , wherein a code used to label the group of coded optical signals comprises a plurality of Walsh-Hadamard codes.

4. The optical network of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of cascaded switches and coders comprises a first switch, a second switch, a third switch, a first coder, and a second coder;

wherein the first switch is configured to direct a signal either to the first coder or to the second switch by bypassing the first coder; and

wherein the second switch is configured to direct the signal either to the second coder or to the third switch by bypassing the second coder.

5. The optical network of claim 1 , wherein the spectral phase encoder comprises log 2 (W) optical 2×2 switches used to produce W Hadamard codes.

6. The optical network of claim 1 , wherein the spectral phase encoder is configured to apply a phase code to optical pulses of the optical signal.

7. The optical network of claim 6 , wherein the phase code corresponds to a phase conjugate known by a specified receiving device.

8. The optical network of claim 6 , wherein the receiving station comprises a decoder configured to apply a phase conjugate of the phase code to the labeled optical signal.

9. The optical network of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of Walsh-Hadamard codes are converted to phase codes by assigning phase shifts to the plurality of Walsh-Hadamard codes.

10. The optical network of claim 1 , wherein the spectral phase encoder is further configured to convert the optical signal into a frequency domain and direct the converted optical signal onto a reflective phase mask.

11. A method comprising:

receiving an optical signal at a spectral phase encoder, wherein the spectral phase encoder comprises a plurality of cascaded switches and coders;

coding the optical signal at a coding component of the spectral phase encoder, wherein the optical signal includes a group of coded optical signals; and

determining a code group label for the optical signal, wherein the code group label represents an encoder group comprising a plurality of encoders.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein a code used to label the group of coded optical signals comprises a plurality of Walsh-Hadamard codes.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of cascaded switches and coders comprises a first switch, a second switch, a third switch, a first coder, and a second coder;

wherein the first switch is configured to direct a signal either to the first coder or to the second switch by bypassing the first coder; and

wherein the second switch is configured to direct the signal either to the second coder or to the third switch by bypassing the second coder.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the spectral phase encoder comprises log 2 (W) optical 2×2 switches used to produce W Hadamard codes.

15. A method comprising:

receiving an optical signal at a spectral phase decoder, wherein the spectral phase decoder comprises a plurality of cascaded switches and decoders;

decoding the optical signal at a coding component of the spectral phase decoder, wherein the optical signal includes a group of coded optical signals; and

determining a code group label for the optical signal, wherein the code group label represents a decoder group comprising a plurality of decoders.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein a code used to label the group of coded optical signals comprises a plurality of Walsh-Hadamard codes.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of cascaded switches and decoders comprises a first switch, a second switch, a third switch, a first decoder, and a second decoder;

wherein the first switch is configured to direct a signal either to the first decoder or to the second switch by bypassing the first decoder; and

wherein the second switch is configured to direct the signal either to the second decoder or to the third switch by bypassing the second decoder.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the spectral phase decoder comprises log 2 (W) optical 2×2 switches used to produce W Hadamard codes.
