Abstract

Interventional catheter assemblies, operating systems and adaptive interface components allow operation of a variety of interventional catheter assemblies, including infusion catheters, aspiration catheters and interventional catheters that provide both infusion and aspiration, using a common control console housing infusion and aspiration systems. Control instructions for operating the interventional catheter assembly and authentication protocols for verifying system matches and operating conditions maybe encoded in hardware, firmware or software, such as a memory or storage device, provided in the interventional catheter assembly or in a discrete adaptive interface component. Adaptive components such as tubing cassettes routing aspiration and/or infusion tubing in a predetermined configuration to mate with aspiration and infusion systems on a control console are also provided.

Claims (14)

1. An interventional catheter assembly comprising an elongated, flexible catheter sized and configured for insertion into a patient and incorporating at least one of an aspiration lumen, an infusion lumen, and a remotely operable operating head, and an electrical cable that, when interfaced with a control console, provides electrical power to the interventional catheter assembly, the interventional catheter assembly additionally comprising an instructional component encoding control instructions associated with the interventional catheter assembly that interacts with and controls operation of at least one of an aspiration system, an infusion system and an operating head when associated with a control console.

2. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the control instructions are encoded in hardware, firmware or software.

3. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the control instructions are encoded in a non-volatile memory element.

4. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the control instructions are encoded in ROM, EEPROM and/or flash memory elements.

5. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the instructional component contains multiple instruction sets that are displayed to an operator when interfaced with a control console.

6. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the instructional component contains multiple instruction sets and, when the interventional catheter assembly interacts with a control console, interventional catheter operating instructions are implemented without operator selection.

7. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 1 , additionally comprising an authentication feature that, when associated with a control console, performs an authentication routine and, and upon successful authentication, allows operation of the interventional catheter on the control console.

The interventional catheter assembly of claim 1 , additionally comprising an authentication feature that, when associated with the control console, performs an authentication routine and, upon successful authentication, allows operation of the interventional catheter by one or more authorized operators.

9. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the interventional catheter assembly comprises an aspiration lumen, an infusion lumen, and an operating head.

10. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the interventional catheter assembly additionally comprises a housing assembly incorporating a fluid management system.

In combination, an interventional catheter assembly comprising: an elongated, flexible catheter sized and configured for insertion into a patient; an electrical cable that, when interfaced with a control console, provides electrical power to the interventional catheter assembly; at least one of an aspiration lumen, an infusion lumen, and a remotely operable operating head; and an auxiliary coding device encoding control instructions associated with the interventional catheter assembly that interacts with and controls operation of at least one of an aspiration system, an infusion system and an operating head when associated with a control console.

The combination of claim 11 , wherein the auxiliary coding device additionally comprises an authentication feature, and when the auxiliary coding device is associated with a control console, an authentication routine is performed, and upon successful authentication, operation of the interventional catheter assembly on the control console is enabled.

A method for operating an interventional catheter assembly comprising: an elongated, flexible catheter sized and configured for insertion into a patient; an electrical cable that, when interfaced with a control console, provides electrical power to the interventional catheter assembly; at least one of an aspiration lumen, an infusion lumen, and a remotely operable operating head; and an instructional component encoding control instructions, the method comprising: associating the interventional catheter assembly with a control console incorporating operating systems for operating at least one of an aspiration lumen, an infusion lumen, and a remotely operable operating head; and communicating the control instructions encoded in the instructional component to the control console, thereby providing operating instructions to the control console that are specific to the interventional catheter assembly.

The method of claim 13 , additionally comprising communicating an authentication protocol from the instructional component to the control console, performing an authentication routine and, upon successful authentication, enabling operation of the interventional catheter assembly on the control console.
