Abstract

A method for viewing of a three dimensional image of a scene with a monocular device on one eye for viewing a first two-dimensional image of the scene and providing a second display for viewing a second two-dimensional image of the scene in a stereo image pair with the other eye. Using a camera to provide an image of the second display to determine the position of the second display relative to the first display. Adjusting the alignment of the first two-dimensional image in correspondence to the determined position of the second display relative to the first display, whereby the viewer perceives a three dimensional image of the scene and one or more other viewers that are not wearing monocular devices can view the second display with both eyes so that they can perceive a two-dimensional image of the scene.

Claims (23)

1. A method for viewing of images of a scene on a display comprising:

providing a monocular device that is wearable by a viewer on one eye, comprising a processor, a camera, an orientation sensor, and a first display;

providing a second display, located remotely from the first display;

the orientation sensor detecting on which eye the monocular device is being worn;

an image delivery system providing a synchronized stereo triplet, wherein the stereo triplet comprises a first image having a first perspective of the scene, a second image having a second perspective of the scene, and a third image having a third perspective of the scene;

the image delivery system transmitting the first image of the stereo triplet to the second display;

the image delivery system transmitting a monocular display image to the first display, wherein the monocular display image is either the second image of the video triplet or the third image of the video triplet depending upon an orientation of the monocular device;

using the camera to capture images of the second display;

analyzing the captured images of the second display with the processor to determine a position of the second display relative to the first display, wherein the position of the second display relative to the first display is determined by detecting the location of corners of the second display;

while the viewer views the second display with the other eye, adjusting the alignment of the monocular display image as displayed on the first display in correspondence to the determined position of the second display relative to the first display, whereby the viewer perceives three dimensional images of the scene.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of analyzing the captured images of the second display further includes determining a perceived size of the second display and wherein the step of adjusting the alignment of the monocular display image further includes adjusting the size of the monocular display image as displayed on the first display in correspondence to the determined perceived size of the second display.

3. The method of claim 2 further including:

using the camera to repeatedly capture images of the second display to determine changes in the position of the second display relative to the first display or to determine changes in the perceived size of the second display, and responsive to determining such changes, adjusting the alignment or size of the monocular display image as displayed on the first display.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the second display includes display indicators adjacent to the display surface.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the display indicators are point source lights.

6. The method of claim 4 wherein there are two or more display indicators.

7. The method of claim 4 wherein the display indicators are infrared lights and the camera is an infrared camera.

8. The method of claim 2 wherein the orientation sensor is an inertial measurement device and the method further comprises:

using the inertial measurement device to determine changes in the location or orientation of the first display, and responsive to determining such changes, adjusting the alignment or size of the monocular display image as displayed on the first display.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the adjustments to the alignment of the monocular display image on the first display include lateral shifts, longitudinal shifts and rotations.

10. The method of claim 2 wherein the adjustment of the size of the monocular display image on the first display is further done in correspondence with predetermined calibration information.

11. The method of claim 3 wherein the adjustment of the alignment of the monocular display image on the first display is done after a detected stop in movement of the monocular device.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of analyzing the captured images of the second display further includes determining the distortion or keystone in the images of the second display and the step of adjusting the alignment of the monocular display image further includes adjusting the distortion or keystone in the monocular display image on the first display in correspondence to the determined distortion or keystone of the second display.
