Abstract

A golf ball including a thermoplastic inner core and a thermoset outer core layer is described. The inner core has a surface hardness of 43 to about 65 Shore D and a center hardness of about 30 to 43 Shore D that is less than the surface hardness to define a positive hardness gradient. A cover includes an inner and outer cover layer. The thermoplastic inner core is formed from a highly-neutralized ionomer comprising a copolymer of ethylene and an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid, an organic acid or salt thereof, and sufficient cation source to fully-neutralize the acid groups of the copolymer by 80% or greater. The outer core layer includes a polybutadiene rubber and has a surface hardness greater than an interior hardness by about 6 to 11 Shore D points to define a shallow positive hardness gradient.

Claims (18)

1. A golf ball comprising:

a core comprising a thermoplastic inner core and a thermoset outer core layer, the inner core having a surface hardness of 43 Shore D to about 65 Shore D and a center hardness of about 30 Shore D to 43 Shore D and is less than the surface hardness to define a first positive hardness gradient; and

a cover comprising an inner cover layer and an outer cover layer;

wherein the thermoplastic inner core comprises a highly-neutralized ionomer comprising a copolymer of ethylene and an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid, an organic acid or salt thereof, and sufficient cation source to fully-neutralize the acid groups of the copolymer by 80% or greater, and the outer core layer comprises a polybutadiene rubber and has a surface hardness greater than an interior hardness by about 6 to 11 Shore D points to define a shallow positive hardness gradient.

2. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the surface hardness of the inner core layer is 43 shore D to about 49 Shore D.

3. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the outer core layer has a surface hardness of about 45 Shore D to about 70 Shore D.

4. The golf ball of claim 3 , wherein the surface hardness of the outer core layer is about 45 Shore D to about 61 Shore D.

5. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the inner cover layer has a hardness of 55 Shore D or greater and the outer cover layer has a hardness of 60 Shore D or less.

6. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the acid groups of the copolymer are neutralized by 90% or greater.

7. The golf ball of claim 6 , wherein the acid groups of the copolymer are neutralized by about 100%.

8. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the organic acid or salt thereof comprises barium, lithium, sodium, zinc, bismuth, chromium, cobalt, copper, potassium, strontium, titanium, tungsten, magnesium, cesium, iron, nickel, silver, aluminum, tin, or calcium salts, or salts of fatty acids.

9. The golf ball of claim 8 , wherein the fatty acid salt comprises stearic acid, behenic acid, erucic acid, oleic acid, linoelic acid or dimerized derivatives thereof.

10. The golf ball of claim 8 , wherein the organic acid or salt thereof comprises comprises a magnesium salt of oleic acid.

11. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic inner core further comprises an ethylene/acid copolymer or ionomer.

12. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the inner core layer further comprises a density-adjusting filler.

13. The golf ball of claim 12 , wherein the density-adjusting filler comprises a metal or metal oxide.

14. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the outer core layer comprises a soft and fast agent.

15. The golf ball of claim 14 , wherein the soft and fast agent comprises a halogenated thiophenol.
