Abstract

A minimal incision maximal access system allows for maximum desirable work space exposure within the incision along with maximum access to the operative field utilizing a minimum incision as small as the width of the working tube. Instead of multiple insertions of dilating tubes the design is a streamlined single entry device to avoid repetitive skin surface entry. The system offers the capability to expand to optimum exposure size for the surgery utilizing retractors depending from a bi-hinged frame having internal or external controls to control the angle and separation of the retractors. Interchangeable retractor blades can be attached to the frame. Both retractor blades are independently controlled as to displacement and angle.

Claims (8)

1. A surgical access device comprising: a main frame having first and second members, each of said first member and said second member have a shape in the form of a U, the first and second members being angularly displaceable with respect to each other; a translation support translatably supported within the first member; a tilting support mounted within the second member; a first retractor blade securely mounted on the translation support, the first retractor blade defining a first concave interior portion; a second retractor blade pivotally coupled to the second member of the main frame, the second retractor blade defining a second concave interior portion, the first and second retractor blades assuming a first, approximated position and a second, spaced apart position, the first and second concave interior portions defining a channel therebetween in the first position, the channel configured and dimensioned to receive an elongate member; and first and second extension members slidably associated with the first and second retractor blades, respectively.

2. The surgical access device according to claim 1 , wherein the first member includes a rotatable member rotatably associated with the translation support, whereby rotation of the rotatable member axially translates the translation support within the first member.

3. The surgical access device according to claim 2 , wherein the second member includes a pinion rotatably associated with the tilting support, whereby rotation of the pinion pivotally moves the second retractor blade.

4. The surgical access device according to claim 1 , wherein the main frame includes a locking screw to lock the angular displacement of the first and second members.

5. The surgical access device according to claim 1 , further comprising an elongate member disposable in the channel.

6. The surgical access device according to claim 5 , wherein the elongate member is an obturator.

7. The surgical access device according to claim 1 , wherein the second retractor blade is connected to the tilting support of the second member.

8. The surgical access device of claim 7 , wherein the tilting support of the second member is pivotable with respect to the second member.
