Abstract

A method and system are provided that examine incoming and outgoing TTY transmissions to determine an identifier for distinguishing between correspondents in a TTY call. The system may utilize existing contact information associated with an incoming call to provide context to a user for accepting incoming calls and during conversations and may apply various display settings. For TTY users, the additional context simplifies the ability to conduct critical reasoning, especially those with cognitive impairments. In particular, a picture from the user's address book is provided to assist in identifying the caller. The other display settings may include modified font styles, colors, multi-line display etc. to differentiate between incoming and outgoing messages.

Claims (42)

1. A method for processing a teletypewriter (TTY) call on a mobile device for displaying text associated with said TTY call, said method comprising:

providing access to at least a first communication line configured to send and receive TTY calls directly without requiring additional equipment;

examining an incoming or outgoing TTY transmission associated with said TTY call for one or more cues to detect speaker changes;

upon detecting a cue indicative of a speaker change, identifying characters received from a prior correspondent which complete a word initiated prior to detection of said cue;

associating a portion of said text with a respective correspondent participating in said TTY call, said correspondent being said mobile device for outgoing TTY transmissions and being an other party for incoming TTY transmissions; and

identifying said respective correspondent for said mobile device by modifying said portion so as to cause text associated with different correspondents to be displayed differently wherein such modification includes modification which causes text corresponding to characters received prior to detection of a cue indicative of a speaker change to be displayed on a display screen provided by said mobile device during said TTY call adjacent to any subsequent characters received from the same correspondent which complete a word initiated prior to detection of said cue.

2. The method according to claim 1 further comprising, for incoming TTY transmissions, comparing an identifier in said TTY transmission associated with said respective correspondent to data stored in an address book on said mobile device and if said other party is found in said address book, accessing at least a portion of said data; wherein said identifying said respective correspondent comprises displaying said at least a portion of said data on said display screen with said portion of said text associated with said TTY call.

3. The method according to claim 2 wherein said at least a portion of said data is a picture associated with said other party.

4. The method according to claim 2 wherein said examining occurs upon receiving an originating TTY transmission from said other party and said identifying said respective correspondent comprises displaying said at least a portion of said data in an incoming call screen.

5. The method according to claim 2 wherein said at least a portion of said data is a picture associated with said other party and said identifying said respective correspondent comprises displaying said picture in a TTY conversation screen for the duration of said TTY call.

6. The method according to claim 1 wherein said modifying said portion of said text comprises differentiating said text in incoming and outgoing TTY transmissions according to one or more display settings.

7. The method according to claim 6 wherein said one or more display settings comprise an option for specifying any one or more of the following settings in combination: font type, font style, font size, case, and colour.

8. The method according to claim 6 wherein said one or more display settings comprise an option for separating said text in incoming and outgoing TTY transmissions using line breaks.

9. The method according to any one of claims 6 to 8 wherein said one or more display settings comprise an option for identifying said text in incoming and outgoing TTY transmissions by displaying a name for said respective correspondent.

10. A computer readable medium comprising computer executable instructions for processing a teletypewriter (TTY) call on a mobile device for displaying text associated with said TTY call, said computer executable instructions comprising instructions for:

providing access to at least a first communication line configured to send and receive TTY calls directly without requiring additional equipment;

examining an incoming or outgoing TTY transmission associated with said TTY call for one or more cues to detect speaker changes;

upon detecting a cue indicative of a speaker change, identifying characters received from a prior correspondent which complete a word initiated prior to detection of said cue;

associating a portion of said text with a respective correspondent participating in said TTY call, said correspondent being said mobile device for outgoing TTY transmissions and being an other party for incoming TTY transmissions; and

identifying said respective correspondent for said mobile device by modifying said portion so as to cause text associated with different correspondents to be displayed differently wherein such modification includes modification which causes text corresponding to characters received prior to detection of a cue indicative of a speaker change to be displayed on a display screen provided by said mobile device during said TTY call adjacent to any subsequent characters received from the same correspondent which complete a word initiated prior to detection of said cue.

11. The computer readable medium according to claim 10 further comprising, for incoming TTY transmissions, instructions for comparing an identifier in said TTY transmission associated with said respective correspondent to data stored in an address book on said mobile device and if said other party is found in said address book, accessing at least a portion of said data; wherein said identifying said respective correspondent comprises displaying said at least a portion of said data on said display screen with said portion of said text associated with said TTY call.

12. The computer readable medium according to claim 11 wherein said at least a portion of said data is a picture associated with said other party.

13. The computer readable medium according to claim 11 wherein said examining occurs upon receiving an originating TTY transmission from said other party and said identifying said respective correspondent comprises displaying said at least a portion of said data in an incoming call screen.

14. The computer readable medium according to claim 11 wherein said at least a portion of said data is a picture associated with said other party and said identifying said respective correspondent comprises displaying said picture in a TTY conversation screen for the duration of said TTY call.

15. The computer readable medium according to claim 10 wherein said modifying said portion of said text comprises differentiating said text in incoming and outgoing TTY transmissions according to one or more display settings.

16. The computer readable medium according to claim 15 wherein said one or more display settings comprise an option for specifying any one or more of the following settings in combination: font type, font style, font size, case, and colour.

17. The computer readable medium according to claim 15 wherein said one or more display settings comprise an option for separating said text in incoming and outgoing TTY transmissions using line breaks.

18. The computer readable medium according to claim 15 wherein said one or more display settings comprise an option for identifying said text in incoming and outgoing TTY transmissions by displaying a name for said respective correspondent.

19. A mobile device comprising a display, an input device, a processor and a memory storing a computer readable teletypewriter (TTY) application, said mobile device storing computer executable instructions for processing a TTY call for displaying text associated with said TTY call by:

providing access to at least a first communication line configured to send and receive TTY calls directly without requiring additional equipment;

examining an incoming or outgoing TTY transmission associated with said TTY call for one or more cues to detect speaker changes;

upon detecting a cue indicative of a speaker change, identifying characters received from a prior correspondent which complete a word initiated prior to detection of said cue;

associating a portion of said text with a respective correspondent participating in said TTY call, said correspondent being said mobile device for outgoing TTY transmissions and being an other party for incoming TTY transmissions; and

identifying said respective correspondent for said mobile device by modifying said portion so as to cause text associated with different correspondents to be displayed differently wherein such modification includes modification which causes text corresponding to characters received prior to detection of a cue indicative of a speaker change to be displayed on a display screen provided by said mobile device during said TTY call adjacent to any subsequent characters received from the same correspondent which complete a word initiated prior to detection of said cue.
