Abstract

Systems and methods for managing communication in an IP network between a server and a probe that does not maintain an IP address by selectively restricting which IP addresses that are identified as active in the network may be borrowed for the probes. Restriction of IP addresses may include a black list to exclude specific IP addresses, a white list from which IP addresses can be drawn or both. This permits control over which IP addresses may be borrowed by probes, reducing false alarms, alerts or other network concerns caused by unexpected IP traffic on a particular IP address in the network.

Claims (47)

1. A method for managing communication in an Internet Protocol (IP) network between a server and a probe, the probe not maintaining an IP address, the method comprising:

providing a first list for storing IP addresses for borrowing by the probe, wherein the IP addresses of the first list are also in use for communication on the IP network;

providing a second list for storing a black sublist of one or more IP addresses and a white sublist of one or more IP addresses, wherein the probe is not permitted to borrow IP addresses from the black sublist for communication with the server, and the probe is permitted to borrow IP addresses from the white sublist for communications with the server regardless of whether the IP addresses from the white sublist are assigned to other network devices in the IP network;

identifying, in the IP network, a set of one or more active IP addresses corresponding to one or more network devices disposed downstream of the probe;

in response to identifying the set of active IP addresses, updating the first list with the identified set of active IP addresses in accordance with the second list;

selecting an IP address from the first list; and

assigning the selected IP address to the probe for communication with the server on top of the IP protocol, wherein assigning the selected IP address to the probe includes sending to the probe a command including the selected IP address as a destination IP address to be borrowed by the probe for communication with the server.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

scrubbing the first list in response to at least one of adding an IP address to the black sublist and removing an IP address from the white sublist; and

if the IP address assigned to the probe was scrubbed from the first list, assigning another IP address to the probe from the first list for communication with the server on top of the IP protocol.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

in the instance where a first IP address on the first list is no longer active or no longer corresponds to a network device disposed downstream of the probe, identifying the first IP address on the first list as an invalid IP address;

removing the invalid IP address from the first list; and

assigning another IP address from the first list to the probe if the invalid IP address was assigned to the probe.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein updating the first list with the identified active IP addresses in accordance with the second list comprises:

adding to the first list any identified IP address, which has not been included in the black sublist but has been included in the white sublist.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing the first list and the second list on the server.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein identifying in the IP network the active IP addresses corresponding to the network devices disposed downstream of the probe comprises:

identifying, by the probe, selected network devices downstream of the probe, wherein the selected network devices have active IP addresses in use for communication on the IP network; and

sending the identified active IP addresses to the server.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

after receiving the command at the probe, sending from the probe a response including the selected IP address as a source IP address.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second list is customer configurable.

9. A system for managing communication in an Internet Protocol (IP) network comprising:

a probe not maintaining an IP address in the IP network; and

a server including:

a first list for storing IP addresses for borrowing by the probe, wherein the IP addresses of the first list are also in use for communication on the IP network;

a second list for storing a black sublist of IP addresses and a white sublist of IP addresses, wherein the probe is not permitted to borrow IP addresses from the black sublist for communication with the server, and the probe is permitted to borrow IP addresses from the white sublist for communications with the server regardless of whether the IP addresses from the white sublist are assigned to other network devices in the IP network; and

non-transitory computer executable instructions, stored in a non-transitory memory, for:

updating the first list in accordance with the second list when an active IP address corresponding to a network device disposed downstream of the probe is identified,

selecting an IP address from the first list; and

assigning the selected IP address to the probe for communication with the server on top of the IP protocol, wherein assigning the selected IP address to the robe includes sending to the probe a command including the selected IP address as a destination IP address to be borrowed by the probe for communication with the server.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein the server includes further non-transitory computer executable instructions, stored in the non-transitory memory, for:

scrubbing the first list in response to at least one of adding an IP address to the black sublist and removing an IP address from the white sublist; and

if the IP address assigned to the probe was scrubbed from the first list, assigning another IP address to the probe from the first list for communication with the server on top of the IP protocol.

11. The system of claim 9 wherein the server includes further non-transitory computer executable instructions, stored in the non-transitory memory, for:

in the instance where a first IP address on the first list is no longer active or no longer corresponds to a network device disposed downstream of the probe, identifying the first IP address on the first list as an invalid IP address;

removing the invalid IP address from the first list; and

assigning another IP address from the first list to the probe if the invalid IP address was assigned to the probe.

12. The system of claim 9 wherein the non-transitory computer executable instruction for updating the first list with the identified active IP addresses in accordance with the second list comprises further non-transitory computer executable instructions for:

adding to the first list any identified IP address which has not been included in the black sublist but has been included in the white sublist.

13. The system of claim 9 wherein the probe includes non-transitory computer executable instructions for:

identifying active IP addresses of network devices downstream of the probe; and

sending the identified active IP addresses to the server.

14. The system of claim 9 wherein the probe comprises further non-transitory computer executable instructions for:

after receiving the command, sending a response including the selected IP address as a source IP address.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second list is customer configurable.
