Abstract

A unified computer network may be created between network devices, such as storage devices, servers, and client computing system through multiple protocols and multiple connections. Each of the connections, regardless of different protocols or physical connections, may employ secure communications links through a secure boot device. For example, a secure communications link may be created through a fibre channel over Ethernet (FCoE) protocol.

Claims (34)

1 . A system, comprising:

a switch;

a first storage device connected to the switch over a first communications link through a first communications protocol;

a secure boot device connected to the first storage device; and

a second storage device connected to the switch over a second communications link through a second communications protocol.

2 . The system of claim 1 , in which the first communications link is Ethernet, and the second communications link is Ethernet.

3 . The system of claim 2 , in which the first storage device and the second storage device are configured to respond to requests through at least one of a common internet file system (CIFS) and a network file system (NFS).

4 . The system of claim 2 , in which the first communications protocol is fibre channel over Ethernet.

5 . The system of claim 4 , in which the second communications link is transmission control protocol/internet protocol (TCP/IP).

6 . The system of claim 1 , in which the first storage device is located remote to the second storage device, in which the second storage device is located on a private cloud network, and in which the first storage device is connected to the second storage device by a public network.

7 . The system of claim 6 , in which the second storage device is connected to the first storage device through a gateway.

8 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a second secure boot device connected to the second storage device.

9 . A method, comprising:

connecting a first storage device to a network through a first connection;

connecting a second storage device to a network through a second connection, in which at least one of the first connection and the second connection comprises a fibre channel over Ethernet (FCoE) connection; and

connecting a secure boot device to the first storage device, in which the first storage device accesses the secure boot device to establish a secure connection with a server.

10 . The method of claim 9 , in which the server is the second storage device.

11 . The method of claim 9 , further comprises securing data in motion (DIM) by the first storage device with an encryption key stored in the secure boot device.

12 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising securing data at rest (DAR) by the first storage device with an encryption key stored in the secure boot device.

13 . An apparatus, comprising:

a processor;

a memory connected to the processor;

a secure boot device connected to the processor; and

a network adapter connected to the processor,

in which the processor is configured:

to establish secure communications through the network adapter with the secure boot device; and

to communicate through the network adapter with a fibre channel over Ethernet (FCoE) protocol.

14 . The apparatus of claim 13 , in which the processor is further configured to encrypt data at rest (DAR) in the memory with an encryption key stored in the secure boot device.

15 . The apparatus of claim 13 , in which the processor is further configured to encrypt data in motion (DIM) transmitted through the network adapter with an encryption key stored in the secure boot device.

16 . The apparatus of claim 13 , in which the processor is configured to receive requests through the network adapter to transmit files from the memory through the network adapter according to at least one of a network file system (NFS) protocol and a common internet file system (CIFS) protocol.

17 . The apparatus of claim 13 , in which the apparatus further comprises a universal serial bus (USB) coupled to the processor and coupled to the secure boot device.

18 . The apparatus of claim 13 , in which the apparatus is a network attached storage (NAS) device, and the secure boot device is integrated into the NAS.

19 . The apparatus of claim 13 , in which the processor is further configured to establish secure communication through a public network connected to the network adapter.

20 . The apparatus of claim 19 , in which the processor is further configured to establish secure communications with a server.
