Abstract

A stormwater filtration system suitable for treatment of stormwater runoff in a developed environment uses a primary treatment bay that includes a filtration bed with live plant matter. A second treatment bay treats water that exceeds the maximum throughput of the primary bay. A reservoir stores treated runoff to water the plants during dry weather. Removable trays on the surface of the primary filtration bed provide plants suitable for ground cover. Additional bays expand the filtration bed throughput and accommodate extended root systems. A flow control may be provided for the primary treatment bay.

Claims (18)

1. A stormwater filtration system, comprising:

a vault forming a bay having a filtration bed with live plant matter therein, an inlet for delivering stormwater into the bay, an outlet flow system in a lower part of the bay for receiving stormwater filtered through the filtration bed and delivering the filtered stormwater out of the bay, wherein the outlet flow system includes a pipe structure having a vertical portion extending to a top portion of the bed and providing a cleanout access for the pipe structure and a horizontal portion running along a lower portion of the bed, at least part of the pipe structure perforated to receive the filtered stormwater, the pipe structure further including a flow control orifice sized to limit flow through the filtration bed to a level lower than an initial infiltration capacity of the filtration bed.

2. The stormwater filtration system of claim 1 including a bypass path for stormwater flows in excess of the level set by the flow control, the bypass path allowing water to exit the bay without passing through the filtration bed.

3. A stormwater filtration media mixture comprising pelletized leaf compost, pelletized pumice, sand and water absorbent crystal material, wherein the media mixture consists essentially of 18-33% by volume of pelletized leaf compost, 50-65% by volume pelletized pumice, 10-25% by volume sand and less than 1% by volume water absorbent crystal material.

4. A stormwater filtration system incorporating the media mixture of claim 3 , the system comprising:

a vault forming a bay having a filtration bed with live plant matter therein, an inlet for delivering stormwater into the bay, an outlet flow system in a lower part of the bay for receiving stormwater filtered through the filtration bed and delivering the filtered stormwater out of the bay, wherein the filtration bed comprises the media mixture of claim 3 .

5. A stormwater filtration system, comprising:

a vault including:

an inlet for receiving stormwater,

a treatment bay with a filtration bed containing live plant matter,

an upper opening through which the live plant matter extends,

an outlet for delivering stormwater out of the treatment bay after passing through the filtration bed,

the vault including a plurality of sidewalls that define the treatment bay, at least one of said sidewalls having one or more buried openings therein for permitting root structure of the live plant matter to extend through the sidewall into material external of the treatment bay,

porous pavement structure around the treatment bay to permit stormwater to pass therethrough and down towards the root structure positioned externally of the treatment bay.

6. The stormwater filtration system of claim 5 , further comprising a gap between the underside of the porous pavement structure and soil therebelow for reducing impact of root expansion upon the paver structure.

7. The stormwater filtration system of claim 5 wherein the buried opening of said at least one sidewall opens to a second bay and the porous pavement structure is supported on sidewalls defining the second bay.

8. A stormwater filtration system, comprising:

a vault forming a first bay and a second bay with a wall therebetween, the first bay having an inlet that receives stormwater, the wall having an opening for delivering stormwater from the first bay to the second bay, the second bay having a filtration bed with live plant matter therein, an outlet flow system in the second bay for receiving stormwater filtered through the filtration bed and delivering the filtered stormwater out of the second bay, wherein the outlet flow system includes a pipe structure having a vertical portion extending to a top portion of the bed and a horizontal portion running along a lower portion of the bed, at least part of the pipe structure perforated to receive the filtered stormwater, the pipe structure further including a flow control orifice sized to limit flow through the filtration bed to a level lower than an initial infiltration capacity of the filtration bed.
