Abstract

A method includes creating a video stream using alternating portions of video from at least two previously compressed files of similar video content having one or both of differing bit rates or dimensional qualities. The video stream is created to have a bit rate that is intermediate bit rates of the at least two previously compressed files. The intermediate bit rate is based on one or more estimates of a wireless link speed over a wireless channel between a user equipment and a network. The method includes outputting the created video stream. Apparatus and program products are also disclosed.

Claims (44)

1 . A method, comprising:

creating a video stream using alternating portions of video from at least two previously compressed files of similar video content having one or both of differing bit rates or dimensional qualities, the video stream created to have a bit rate that is intermediate bit rates of the at least two previously compressed files, the intermediate bit rate based on one or more estimates of a wireless link speed over a wireless channel between a user equipment and a network; and

outputting the created video stream.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least two previously compressed files have compressed versions of a same video.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the at least two previously compressed files has a compressed version of multiple views of the same video scenes.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein creating the video stream is performed responsive to the one or more estimates of wireless link speed being a different by a threshold from a current streaming link bit rate.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more estimates are determined using one or more indications from the user equipment of the wireless link speed.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more estimates are determined based on a rate of transmission control protocol/Internet protocol acknowledgments received from the user equipment.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein creating comprises alternating and splicing together video groups of pictures from the at least two previously compressed files to create the video stream having the intermediate bit rate.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein:

the at least two previously compressed files comprise a first previously compressed file and a second previously compressed file;

the video stream is a first video stream;

the method further comprises:

creating a second video stream using one of the first or second previously compressed files;

creating a third video stream using an other of the first or second previously compressed files; and

outputting further comprises outputting the second video stream followed by the first video stream followed by the third video stream.

9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the created video stream comprises consecutive groups of pictures comprising a first group of pictures from a first of the at least two previously compressed files, the first group of pictures preceded and followed by second groups of pictures from a second of the at least two previously compressed files.

10 . The method of claim 7 , wherein:

a first of the at least two previously compressed files has a lower bit rate relative to a higher bit rate for a second of the at least two previously compressed files;

the lower bit rate is a next lower value (NLV) of compression relative to the intermediate bit rate;

the higher bit rate is a next higher value (NHV) of compression relative to the intermediate bit rate;

the method further comprises determining a preferred compression (PC) bit rate based at least on the one or more estimates of the wireless link speed; and

the alternating pattern comprises [(PC-NLV)/(NHV-NLV)] percent of groups of pictures from the second previously compressed file and 1−[(PC-NLV)/(NHV-NLV)] percent of groups of pictures from the first previously compressed file.

11 . The method of claim 7 , wherein a rate of change of bit rate caused by the alternating and splicing is limited to a specific rate of change.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the created video stream is used to transition from a first portion of a video stream at a first bit rate to a second portion of a video stream at a second bit rate, and wherein outputting further comprises outputting the first portion, the created video stream, and the second portion over one or two epochs.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the video stream is a first video stream having for a first time period a bit rate above an estimate of the wireless link speed;

creating further comprises creating the first video stream using first and second ones of the at least two previously compressed files, the first previously compressed file having a lower bit rate relative to a higher bit rate for the second previously compressed file;

the method further comprises:

creating a second video stream using a third previously compressed file having a third bit rate lower than the bit rates of the first and second previously compressed files, wherein the third video stream is created for a second time period to reduce overall bit rate of the first and second video streams during the first and second time periods to about the estimate of the wireless link speed; and

outputting further comprises outputting the first and second video streams.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

creating further comprises creating the first video stream using first and second ones of the at least two previously compressed files;

for some portion of the created video stream, the creating is performed wherein there are more portions of video from one of the first or second previously compressed files than there are from an other one of the first or second previously compressed files.

15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein creating further comprises creating the first video stream using first and second ones of the at least two previously compressed files and wherein, for some portion of the created video stream, the creating is performed wherein there are equivalent portions of video from one of the first or second previously compressed files as there are from an other one of the first or second previously compressed files.

16 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the video stream is created to fill at least a portion of an epoch.

17 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining a preferred compression level based on at least the one or more estimates of the wireless link speed, and wherein creating is performed to cause the created video stream to have a bit rate determined using a bit rate of the preferred compression level.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the creating is performed in response to the preferred compression level meeting one or more criteria relative to one or more of the lower or higher bit rates.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the creating is performed to cause the created video stream to have a bit rate approximately a same as the bit rate of the preferred compression level.

20 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

creating the video stream is performed responsive to a comparison of one of a three-dimensional or a two-dimensional status being provided in a current epoch relative to an other of the three-dimensional or the two-dimensional status to be provided in the next epoch indicating a change in status;

the first previously compressed file comprises a file comprising two-dimensional video; and

the second previously compress file comprises a file comprising three-dimensional video.
