System and method for updating presence information in instant messaging applications on a mobile device
View Patent ↗A system and method for controlling the presence status on a mobile device is provided. The method comprises determining an active notification profile for said mobile device, said active notification profile defining how said mobile device notifies of new events; determining a corresponding presence status for said active notification profile; and setting said corresponding presence status as a current presence status.
1. A method of enabling instant messaging presence statuses for an instant messaging application on a mobile device to be controlled, the method comprising:
detecting a first input identifying a notification profile for the mobile device selected from a plurality of notification profiles, the notification profiles defining how the mobile device notifies of new events;
enabling a particular one of a plurality of instant messaging presence statuses to be associated with the notification profile; and
storing the association between the particular instant messaging presence status and the notification profile to have the particular instant messaging presence status set as a current instant messaging presence status for the instant messaging application when the notification profile is determined to be an active one of the plurality of notification profiles for the mobile device.
2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
detecting a second input identifying the notification profile as the active notification profile; and
setting the particular instant messaging presence status as the current instant messaging presence status.
3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising storing the association between the notification profile and the particular instant messaging presence status as one of a plurality of associations between existing notification profiles and corresponding instant messaging presence statuses.
4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising enabling the notification profile to be added as a custom notification profile to a list of existing notification profiles.
5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising enabling a custom instant messaging presence status to be created for the custom notification profile.
6. The method of claim 1 , the first input selecting a menu option for linking notification profiles to instant messaging presence statuses.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein enabling the particular instant messaging presence status to be associated with the notification profile comprises displaying a graphical user interface providing an input mechanism for associating the particular instant messaging presence status.
8. The method of claim 7 , the graphical user interface enabling selection of a corresponding instant messaging presence status for each of the plurality of notification profiles.
9. The method of claim 7 , the input mechanism comprising an option for creating a custom notification profile.
10. A mobile device comprising:
a processor; and
a memory, the memory storing computer executable instructions for enabling presence statuses for an application on the mobile device to be controlled, the computer executable instructions when executed, operate the processor to:
detect a first input identifying a notification profile for the mobile device selected from a plurality of notification profiles, the notification profiles defining how the mobile device notifies of new events;
enable a particular one of a plurality of instant messaging presence statuses to be associated with the notification profile; and
store the association between the particular instant messaging presence status and the notification profile to have the particular instant messaging presence status set as a current instant messaging presence status for the instant messaging application when the notification profile is determined to be an active one of the plurality of notification profiles for the mobile device.
11. The mobile device claim 10 , the computer executable instructions further operable to:
detect a second input identifying the notification profile as the active notification profile; and
set the particular instant messaging presence status as the current presence status.

The mobile device of claim 10 , the computer executable instructions further operable to store the association between the notification profile and the particular instant messaging presence status as one of a plurality of associations between existing notification profiles and corresponding instant messaging presence statuses.
13. The mobile device of claim 10 , the computer executable instructions further operable to enable the notification profile to be added as a custom notification profile to a list of existing notification profiles.
14. The mobile device of claim 13 , the computer executable instructions further operable to enable a custom instant messaging presence status to be created for the custom notification profile.
15. The mobile device of claim 10 , the first input selecting a menu option for linking notification profiles to instant messaging presence statuses.
16. The mobile device of claim 10 , wherein enabling the particular instant messaging presence status to be associated with the notification profile comprises displaying a graphical user interface providing an input mechanism for associating the particular instant messaging presence status.
17. The mobile device of claim 16 , the graphical user interface enabling selection of a corresponding instant messaging presence status for each of the plurality of notification profiles.
18. The mobile device of claim 16 , the input mechanism comprising an option for creating a custom notification profile.
19. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising computer executable instructions for enabling instant messaging presence statuses for an application on a mobile device to be controlled, the computer executable instructions comprising instructions for:
detecting a first input identifying a notification profile for the mobile device selected from a plurality of notification profiles, the notification profiles defining how the mobile device notifies of new events;
enabling a particular one of a plurality of instant messaging presence statuses to be associated with the notification profile; and
storing the association between the particular instant messaging presence status and the notification profile to have the particular instant messaging presence status set as a current instant messaging presence status for the instant messaging application when the notification profile is determined to be an active one of the plurality of notification profiles for the mobile device.
