Abstract

A mobile wireless communications device includes a housing and circuit board carried by the housing and having RF circuitry comprising at least one RF component and plurality of other components mounted on the circuit board. An RF metal shield is secured to the circuit board and surrounds and isolates the at least one RF component and plurality of other components within the RF metal shield. An RF absorber is positioned adjacent an area of the RF component that radiates energy to aid in reducing energy radiated from the RF component into the RF metal shield.

Claims (36)

1. An electronic device comprising:

at least one RF radiating integrated circuit (IC);

at least one other component susceptible to RF interference;

an RF shield covering the at least one RF radiating IC and the at least one other component susceptible to RF interference;

the RF shield comprising a top and at least one sidewall extending therefrom, the RF shield having at least one opening therein; and

an RF absorbing material at least partially covering the at least one opening in the RF shield.

2. The electronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the RF absorbing material comprises a ferrite material.

3. The electronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the RF absorbing material completely covers the at least one opening in the RF shield.

4. The electronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the RF absorbing material comprises a planar sheet of RF absorbing material.

5. The electronic device according to claim 4 , further comprising an adhesive tape securing the planar sheet to the RF shield.

6. The electronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one opening comprises a longitudinal slot.

7. The electronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one RF radiating IC comprises at least one of an RF transmitter IC and a local oscillator IC.

8. The electronic device according to claim 1 , further comprising a housing and a circuit board carried thereby; and wherein the at least one radiating IC, the at least one other component susceptible to RF interference, and the RF shield are carried by the circuit board.

9. An electronic device comprising:

a housing;

a circuit board carried by the housing;

at least one RF radiating integrated circuit (IC) carried by the circuit board;

at least one other component susceptible to RF interference carried by the circuit board;

an RF shield carried by the circuit board and covering the at least one RF radiating IC and the at least one other component susceptible to RF interference;

the RF shield and comprising a top and at least one sidewall extending therefrom, the RF shield having at least one opening therein; and

an RF absorbing material covering the at least one opening in the RF shield.

10. The electronic device according to claim 9 , wherein the RF absorbing material comprises a ferrite material.

11. The electronic device according to claim 9 , wherein the RF absorbing material comprises a planar sheet of RF absorbing material.

12. The electronic device according to claim 11 , further comprising an adhesive tape securing the planar sheet to the RF shield.

13. The electronic device according to claim 9 , wherein the at least one opening comprises a longitudinal slot.

14. The electronic device according to claim 9 , wherein the at least one RF radiating IC comprises at least one of an RF transmitter IC, and a local oscillator IC.

15. A method for making an electronic device comprising:

covering at least one RF radiating IC and at least one other component susceptible to RF interference with an RF shield comprising a top and at least one sidewall extending therefrom, the RF shield having at least one opening therein; and

at least partially covering the at least one opening in the RF shield with an RF absorbing material.

16. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the RF absorbing material comprises a ferrite material.

17. The method according to claim 15 , wherein at least partially covering comprises completely covering the at least one opening in the RF shield with the RF absorbing material.

18. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the RF absorbing material comprises a planar sheet of RF absorbing material.

19. The method according to claim 18 , further comprising using an adhesive tape securing the planar sheet to the RF shield.

20. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the at least one opening comprises a longitudinal slot.

21. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the at least one RF radiating IC comprises at least one of an RF transmitter IC, and a local oscillator IC.

22. The method according to claim 15 , further comprising mounting the at least one radiating IC, the at least one other component susceptible to RF interference, and the RF shield to a circuit board to be positioned within a housing.
