Abstract

A handheld electronic device includes a reduced QWERTY keyboard and is enabled with disambiguation software that is operable to disambiguate compound text input. The device is able to assemble language objects in the memory to generate compound language solutions. The device is able to generate compound language solutions by employing different groupings of data sources to generate different portions of the compound language solutions.

Claims (21)

1. A handheld electronic device comprising:

an input element;

an output element;

a processor; and

a memory, the memory having stored therein a number of objects including a number of language objects comprised of a number of linguistic elements, wherein at least some of the language objects are stored in a first data source corresponding to a generic word list, and wherein at least some of the language objects are stored in a second data source corresponding to a user-defined word list;

wherein the processor is configured to:

detect an ambiguous input from the input element;

search both the first data source corresponding to the generic word list and the second data source corresponding to the user-defined word list to identify a language object corresponding with an initial portion of the ambiguous input;

search one of the first data source corresponding to the generic word list and the second data source corresponding to the user-defined word list to identify another language object corresponding with another portion of the ambiguous input; and

output a representation of at least one proposed compound word for the ambiguous input to the output element, the representation comprising a representation of the language object and a representation of at least a portion of the another language object.

2. The handheld electronic device of claim 1 , wherein at least some of the linguistic elements together form a core alphabet, the language objects stored in the first data source each consisting of a number of the linguistic elements of the core alphabet, the processor being configured to search the first data source as the one of the first data source and the second data source.

3. The handheld electronic device of claim 2 , wherein at least a first linguistic element not in the core alphabet is stored on the handheld electronic device, at least a first language object comprising the at least first linguistic element being stored in the second data source, the processor being configured, for the at least one proposed compound word, to identify as the language object corresponding with the initial portion the at least first language object.

4. The handheld electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to search as the one of the first data source and the second data source a static data source having stored therein a number of language objects.

5. A method for a handheld electronic device to provide one or more proposed compound words for an ambiguous input, the device including an input element, an output element, a processor, and a memory, the memory having stored therein a number of objects including a number of language objects comprised of a number of linguistic elements, at least some of the language objects being stored in a first data source corresponding to a generic word list, and at least some of the language objects being stored in a second data source corresponding to a user-defined word list, the method comprising:

detecting, by the processor, an ambiguous input from the input element;

searching, by the processor, both the first data source corresponding to the generic word list and the second data source corresponding to the user-defined word list to identify a language object corresponding with an initial portion of the ambiguous input;

searching, by the processor, one of the first data source corresponding to the generic word list and the second data source corresponding to the user-defined word list to identify another language object corresponding with another portion of the ambiguous input; and

outputting, by the processor, a representation of at least one proposed compound word for the ambiguous input to the output element, the representation comprising a representation of the language object and a representation of at least a portion of the another language object.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein at least some of the linguistic elements together form a core alphabet, the language objects stored in the first data source each consisting of a number of the linguistic elements of the core alphabet, and further comprising searching the first data source as the one of the first data source and the second data source.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein at least a first linguistic element not in the core alphabet is stored on the handheld electronic device, at least a first language object comprising the at least first linguistic element being stored in the second data source, and further comprising, for the at least one proposed compound word, identifying as the language object corresponding with the initial portion the at least first language object.

8. The method of claim 5 , further comprising searching as the one of the first data source and the second data source a static data source having stored therein a number of language objects.
