Abstract

A system and method monitors and weeds out illegitimate/illegal websites during search engine indexing and domain name registration. The whois database generated during domain name registration is used as a reference database for correlation with a database generated by the search crawler on a search engine server. A whois analyzer from the search engine server extracts a set of URLs into a database called the uncorrelated URL database. The uncorrelated URL database contains those URLs from both the aggregate whois database and reverse index database after removing common URLs. The uncorrelated URLs are contacted and advised by the whois administrator to take necessary action to be listed in the whois database and properly be indexed during search engine crawling. This process ensures that URLs are properly registered and identified on the Internet thus eliminating the success of illegal/unwanted websites. Trademark information may also be used in the site validation process.

Claims (35)

1 . A method performed by a search infrastructure, the method comprising:

comparing the plurality of trademark related domain name text with the list of domain names; and

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the comparison results in an identification of a plurality of domain names, and the plurality of domain names are penalized in relation to future search result.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the comparison identifies at least one of squatters, spammers, and scammers.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising computing a web page quality factor based at least in part on the comparison.

6 . A search infrastructure comprising:

a first database;

a processing infrastructure that stores in the first database (i) a plurality of trademark related domain name text, (ii) administrator contact information for each of the plurality of trademark related domain name text;

the processing infrastructure (i) gathers a plurality of domain names in a process associated with Internet web crawling, and (ii) compares the plurality of trademark related domain name text with the plurality of domain names;

a communication interface; and

the processing infrastructure, via the communication interface, delivers information indicating a web page related bad characteristic revealed via the comparison.

7 . The search infrastructure of claim 6 , wherein the delivery uses at least a portion of the administrator contact information.

8 . The search infrastructure of claim 6 , wherein the delivery uses second contact information associated with one of the plurality of domain names.

9 . The search infrastructure of claim 6 , wherein the delivery is managed via an interface session established by a first administrator corresponding to a first portion of the administrator contact information.

10 . The search infrastructure of claim 6 , further comprising computing at least one web page quality factor relating at least in part to the comparison by the processing infrastructure.

11 . The search infrastructure of claim 6 , wherein the web page is penalized regarding future searching.

12 . The search infrastructure of claim 6 , wherein the web page is provided by at least one of a squatter, scammer, and spammer.

13 . A search infrastructure supporting Internet searching, the search infrastructure comprising:

at least one database;

a processing infrastructure that stores in the at least one database (i) a plurality of branding related domain name text, (ii) administrator contact information for each of the plurality of branding related domain name text;

the processing infrastructure (i) gathers a plurality of domain names in a process associated with Internet web crawling, and (ii) evaluates the with the plurality of domain names against the plurality of branding related domain name text;

a communication interface; and

the processing infrastructure, via the communication interface, identifies a bad characteristic associated with a web page, the bad characteristic being revealed via the evaluation by the processing infrastructure.

14 . The search infrastructure of claim 13 , wherein the identification of the bad characteristic comprises delivering information regarding the bad characteristic using the administrator contact information.

15 . The search infrastructure of claim 13 , wherein the identification of the bad characteristic comprises delivering information regarding the bad characteristic using second contact information associated with the web page.

16 . The search infrastructure of claim 14 , wherein the delivery is managed via an interface session established by a first administrator.

17 . The search infrastructure of claim 13 , further comprising computing at least one quality factor associated with the web page.

18 . The search infrastructure of claim 13 , wherein the web page is penalized regarding future searching.

19 . The search infrastructure of claim 13 , wherein the web page is provided by at least one of a squatter, scammer, and spammer.

20 . The search infrastructure of claim 6 , wherein the web page is blocked from future search results.
