Abstract

An apparatus for repeating signals includes a receive antenna for receiving input signals, processing circuitry for processing the input signals to form repeated signals, and a transmit antenna for transmitting the repeated signals. The processing circuitry includes an adaptive digital filter configured to generate cancellation signals that are added to the input signals to cancel unwanted feedback signals from the input signals. A frequency shifting circuit adds a frequency shift to the input signals, after the addition of the cancellation signals, to form repeated signals that are frequency shifted from the input signals. A digital signal processor is coupled to the adaptive digital filter for digitally adapting the filter. The digital signal processor utilizes the frequency shift of the transmission signals to adapt the adaptive digital filter.

at least one receive antenna for receiving input signals, processing circuitry for processing the input signals to form repeated signals and at least one transmit antenna for transmitting the repeated signals;

the processing circuitry including:

circuitry configured to generate cancellation signals that are added to the input signals to attenuate feedback signals in the input signals;

circuitry for modifying the repeated signals prior to their transmission so that the repeated signals are transmitted, as modified, by the at least one transmit antenna, the repeated signals being modified with respect to the received input signals to differentiate the modified repeated signals, that are received as feedback through the at least one receive antenna, from the input signals;

processor circuitry coupled to the circuitry configured to generate cancellation signals, the processor circuitry operable for affecting the way the cancellation signals are generated, the processor circuitry configured for utilizing the modified repeated signals for affecting the way the cancellation signals are generated.

2. The system of claim 1 , the processing circuitry further comprising a frequency shifting circuit configured for modifying the repeated signals by adding a frequency shift to the repeated signals prior to their transmission to form repeated signals that are frequency shifted from the input signals, the processing circuitry configured for utilizing the frequency shifted repeated signals to affect the way the cancellation signals are generated.

3. The system of claim 1 the processing circuitry configured for utilizing the modified repeated signals for de-correlating, from the input signals, the repeated signals that are received as feedback signals through the at least one receive antenna, the processor circuitry relying on this de-correlation for affecting the way the cancellation signals are generated.

4. The system of claim 1 further comprising an adaptive digital filter configured to generate cancellation signals that are added to the input signals to attenuate feedback signals in the input signals, the processor circuitry coupled to the adaptive digital filter and operable for adapting the filter.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein the adaptive digital filter has multiple taps to generate cancellation signals that attenuate feedback signals that have a plurality of path lengths.

6. The system of claim 4 wherein the adaptive digital filter is a FIR filter.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry configured to generate cancellation signals is configured to generate cancellation signals to address previous repeated signals that are received directly from the transmit antenna and previous repeated signals that are reflected from surfaces remote from the transmit antenna.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the processing circuitry further includes a control circuit, the control circuit configured to evaluate the input signals and determine the frequency at which the input signals and the repeated signals beat together, the control circuit operable for slowing down, in real time, the generation of the cancellation signals when the signals beat together.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the processing circuitry further includes a control circuit, the control circuit configured to evaluate the input signals and determine the frequency at which the input signals and the repeated signals beat together, the control circuit operable for pausing, in real time, the generation of the cancellation signals during the time when the signals beat together.

10. The system of claim 2 wherein the frequency shifting circuit is configured for adding a frequency shift to the repeated signals after the addition of the cancellation signals.

11. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for modifying the repeated signals is configured to dynamically vary the way the repeated signals are modified.

12. The system of claim 2 wherein the processing circuitry is configured to dynamically increase or decrease the amount of frequency shift provided by the frequency shifting circuit to the repeated signals.

13. The system of claim 2 wherein the processing circuitry is configured to evaluate the amount of frequency shift added to the repeated signals and to synchronize the way the cancellation signals are generated based on the amount of frequency shift provided by the frequency shifting circuit.

14. The system of claim 11 wherein the processing circuitry is operable to evaluate the input signals to determine the level of signal traffic in the apparatus, the processing circuitry configured for dynamically modulating the way the repeated signals are modified based on the signal traffic level.

15. The system of claim 11 wherein the way the repeated signals are modified is dynamically varied in a periodic manner.

16. The system of claim 2 wherein the processing circuitry further includes:

a delay element for introducing a delay to the input signals to form repeated signals that are both time delayed and frequency shifted from the input signals;

the processing circuitry configured for utilizing the time delay and the frequency shift of the repeated signals to affect the way cancellation signals are generated.

17. The system of claim 2 wherein the processing circuitry is operable to determine if the frequency shift is sufficient to differentiate the input signals and repeated signals, the processing circuitry adapting the way the cancellation signals are generated if the frequency shift is sufficient and not adapting the way the cancellation signals are generated if the frequency shift is not sufficient.

18. The system of claim 1 wherein the repeated signals are repeated in both a downlink (DL) and an uplink (UL) direction.
