Abstract

A method of making a conductive article includes depositing on a substrate a metal nanoparticle composition having water, silver nanoparticles dispersed in the water and a water-soluble polymer having both carboxylic acid and sulfonic acid groups. The weight percentage of silver in the composition is greater than 10%. The metal nanoparticle composition is dried. The dried metal nanoparticle composition is converted to improve the electrical conductivity of the dried metal nanoparticle composition.

Claims (24)

1. A method of making a conductive article comprising:

depositing on a substrate an aqueous metal nanoparticle composition having water, silver nanoparticles dispersed in the water, and a water-soluble polymer having both carboxylic acid and sulfonic acid groups, wherein the water-soluble polymer is selected from the group consisting of poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) or poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-acrylic acid), wherein the weight percentage of silver in the composition is greater than 10%;

drying the aqueous metal nanoparticle composition; and

converting the dried aqueous metal nanoparticle composition to improve the electrical conductivity of the dried aqueous metal nanoparticle composition.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein converting includes heating the dried aqueous metal nanoparticle composition to a temperature in a range of 100° C. to 400° C.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the temperature range is from 150° C. to 300° C.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein the heating is provided by a light source.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein converting includes exposing the dried aqueous metal nanoparticle composition to a halide.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the halide is a chloride or a bromide.

7. The method of claim 5 wherein the halide is provided by a vapor source.

8. The method of claim 5 wherein the halide is provided in or on the substrate.

9. The method of claim 5 wherein converting further includes heating the aqueous metal nanoparticle composition to a temperature in a range of 40° C. to 120° C.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein converting includes exposing the dried aqueous metal nanoparticle composition to a halogen-containing polymer.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the halogen-containing polymer is provided in or on the substrate.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the halogen-containing polymer includes polyvinyl chloride or polyvinylidene chloride or both.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein converting further includes heating the aqueous metal nanoparticle composition to a temperature in a range of 40° C. to 120° C.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the substrate includes a channel and the aqueous metal nanoparticle composition is provided into the channel.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the aqueous metal nanoparticle composition is deposited onto the substrate by first providing the aqueous metal nanoparticle composition onto upper areas of a relief pattern, followed by contacting the relief pattern to the substrate in order to transfer the aqueous metal nanoparticle composition from the relief pattern to the substrate.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein the aqueous metal nanoparticle composition is deposited onto the substrate by ink jetting.

17. The method of claim 1 wherein the carboxylic acid group is formed from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, ethacrylic acid, itaconic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, monoalkyl itaconate, monoalkyl maleate, citraconic acid, styrenecarboxylic acid, 2-carboxyethyl acrylate or 2-carboxyethyl acrylate oligomers.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein the molar ratio of sulfonic acid groups to carboxylic acid groups is in a range of 0.05 to 5.

19. The method of claim 1 wherein the weight ratio of the polymer to silver is from 0.0005 to 0.04.

20. The method of claim 1 wherein the weight ratio of the polymer to silver is from 0.0005 to 0.02.

21. The method of claim 1 wherein the aqueous metal nanoparticle composition further includes a humectant, a surfactant, a latex polymer, a thickener, a colorant, a cross-linker or combinations thereof.
