Abstract

A method includes generating a first coded data stream and a second coded data stream both representing the same content, the first coded data stream and the second coded data stream being independently decodable from each other, transmitting portions of the first coded data stream in first and second time-sliced bursts, and transmitting a portion of the second coded data stream in a third time-sliced burst, where the transmission of the portions of the first and second coded data streams do not overlap with each other, and occur subsequently to each other in transmission order and substantially without delay between transmission of data.

Claims (38)

1. A method comprising:

generating a first coded data stream and a second coded data stream representing the same content coded at different qualities, the first coded data stream and the second coded data stream being independently decodable from each other; and

alternately transmitting portions of the first coded data stream and the second coded data stream in non-overlapping time-sliced bursts,

wherein the transmission of the portions of the first and second coded data streams occur subsequently to each other in transmission order and substantially without delay between transmission of data.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the different qualities include one or more of bit rate, display size, sampling rate, or compression parameters.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the content includes media data and the media data in all time slices are substantially of the same duration.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the alternately transmitted time sliced bursts of the first coded data stream and the second coded data stream are placed maximally apart from each other.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the alternately transmitted portions of the first coded data stream and the second coded data stream are transmitted in order of receiver capability.

6. An apparatus comprising:

a processor;

a memory including program computer code;

the computer program code configured to, when executed by the processor, cause the apparatus to:

generate a first coded data stream and a second coded data stream representing the same content coded at different qualities, the first coded data stream and the second coded data stream being independently decodable from each other; and

alternately transmit portions of the first coded data stream and the second coded data stream in non-overlapping time-sliced bursts,

wherein the transmission of the portions of the first and second coded data streams occur subsequently to each other in transmission order and substantially without delay between transmission of data.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the different qualities include one or more of bit rate, display size, sampling rate, or compression parameters.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the content includes media data and the media data in all time slices are substantially of the same duration.

9. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the computer program causes the apparatus to place the alternately transmitted time sliced bursts of the first coded data stream and the second coded data stream maximally apart from each other.

10. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the computer program causes the apparatus to transmit the alternately transmitted portions of the first coded data stream and the second coded data stream in order of receiver capability.

11. A method comprising:

alternately receiving in non-overlapping time sliced bursts, a first coded data stream and a second coded data stream representing the same content coded at different qualities, the first coded data stream and the second coded data stream being independently decodable from each other; and

decoding a subset of the received non-overlapping time sliced bursts of the first coded data stream and a subset of the received non-overlapping time sliced bursts of the second coded data stream,

wherein the transmission of the portions of the first and second coded data streams occur subsequently to each other in transmission order and substantially without delay between transmission of data.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the different qualities include one or more of bit rate, display size, sampling rate, or compression parameters.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the content includes media data and the media data in the time slices are substantially of the same duration.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the alternately received time sliced bursts of the first coded data stream and the second coded data stream are placed maximally apart from each other.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the alternately received portions of the first coded data stream and the second coded data stream are received in order of receiver capability.

16. An apparatus comprising:

a processor;

a memory including program computer code;

the computer program code configured to, when executed by the processor, cause the apparatus to:

alternately receive in non-overlapping time sliced bursts, a first coded data stream and a second coded data stream representing the same content coded at different qualities, the first coded data stream and the second coded data stream being independently decodable from each other; and

decode a subset of the received non-overlapping time sliced bursts of the first coded data stream and a subset of the received non-overlapping time sliced bursts of the second coded data stream,

wherein the transmission of the portions of the first and second coded data streams occur subsequently to each other in transmission order and substantially without delay between transmission of data.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the different qualities include one or more of bit rate, display size, sampling rate, or compression parameters.

18. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the content includes media data and the media data in all time slices are substantially of the same duration.

19. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the alternately received time sliced bursts of the first coded data stream and the second coded data stream are placed maximally apart from each other.

20. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the alternately received portions of the first coded data stream and the second coded data stream are received in order of receiver capability.
