Abstract

An improved shot sleeve for high pressure die casting of low-iron Aluminum Silicon alloys and a method of making the shot sleeve, the shot sleeve includes a top portion including a pouring hole and a bottom portion including an impingement site on an inner surface of the bottom portion opposite the pouring hole. The impingement site is constructed of an erosion resistant material. The erosion resistant material is selected from: titanium, tungsten, molybdenum, ruthenium, tantalum, niobium, chromium, vanadium, zirconiwn, hafnium or a secondary, tertiary or quaternary alloy formed from combination thereof. An erosion resistant insert located at an impingement site of a shot sleeve may accomplish the construction. The insert may be introduced into an internal surface of a conventional shot sleeve or replace a bottom portion of a conventional shot sleeve.

Claims (19)

1. An erosion resistant insert for high pressure die casting of aluminum silicon alloys containing 0.40% max Fe, the erosion resistant insert located at an impingement site of a high pressure die casting shot sleeve constructed of conventional tool steel, the shot sleeve receiving a shot rod plunger at one end and leading to a mold cavity at the other end, the erosion resistant insert constructed of an erosion resistant material comprising one of:

titanium, tungsten, molybdenum, ruthenium, tantalum, niobium, chromium, vanadium, zirconium, hafnium, rhenium, boron, or a secondary, tertiary or quaternary alloy formed from combination thereof;

wherein the erosion resistant material prevents erosion from the aluminum silicon alloys through insolubility in molten aluminum;

the erosion resistant insert having a terminal end located proximate to the mold cavity, the terminal end having a thickness, wherein the terminal end thickness abuts the conventional tool steel of the shot sleeve.

2. The erosion resistant insert for high pressure die casting of claim 1 wherein the erosion resistant material is tungsten.

3. The erosion resistant insert for high pressure die casting of claim 1 wherein the erosion resistant material comprises at least 85% of one of the following elements: titanium, tungsten, molybdenum, ruthenium, tantalum, niobium, chromium, vanadium, zirconium, hafnium, or rhenium.

4. The erosion resistant insert of claim 3 wherein the erosion resistant material is an alloy consisting essentially of 90% by weight tungsten, 4% by weight molybdenum, 4% by weight nickel, and 2% by weight iron.

5. The erosion resistant insert for high pressure die casting of claim 1 wherein the erosion resistant material is niobium.

6. The erosion resistant insert for high pressure die casting of claim 3 wherein the erosion resistant material contains at least 85% niobium.

7. The erosion resistant insert for high pressure die casting of claim 1 wherein the erosion resistant material is molybdenum.

8. The erosion resistant insert for high pressure die casting of claim 3 wherein the erosion resistant material contains at least 85% molybdenum.

9. The erosion resistant insert for high pressure die casting of claim 1 wherein the erosion resistant material is titanium.

10. The erosion resistant insert for high pressure die casting of claim 3 wherein the erosion resistant material contains at least 85% titanium.

11. The erosion resistant insert for high pressure die casting of claim 1 wherein the erosion resistant material is chromium.

12. The erosion resistant insert for high pressure die casting of claim 3 wherein the erosion resistant material contains at least 85% chromium.

13. The erosion resistant insert for high pressure die casting of claim 1 wherein the erosion resistant material is zirconium.

14. The erosion resistant insert for high pressure die casting of claim 3 wherein the erosion resistant material contains at least 85% zirconium.

15. The erosion resistant insert for high pressure die casting of claim 1 wherein the erosion resistant material is ruthenium.

16. The erosion resistant insert for high pressure die casting of claim 3 wherein the erosion resistant material contains at least 85% ruthenium.
